Crieff Hydro

8.4
Very Good See all 5 reviews

Set in the Strathearn Valley, about an hour from Edinburgh and Glasgow, Crieff Hydro mixes big Victorian character with modern resort comforts across 900 acres of Perthshire countryside. If you like your golf breaks with a bit of atmosphere, this place delivers, it feels like a proper Scottish hotel rather than a bolt-on golf base.

Golf-wise, you're in a very handy spot. Crieff Golf Club is right next door and the three layouts at Gleneagles are roughly 20 minutes away, so you can build a trip around one 'big day' at Gleneagles and still keep the rest of the schedule easy. There's also an onsite driving range and an indoor simulator, which is ideal if your tee time is later in the day or you fancy a quick tune-up before dinner.

What makes Crieff Hydro work particularly well is that it doesn't force everyone into the same routine. Non-golfers can get stuck into mountain biking, horse riding and fishing, while everyone can meet back at the spa afterwards, there's an indoor pool, steam room, sauna and spa bath, with views out to the Perthshire hills. In short, it's a strong option for couples, families and societies who want good golf access without the trip feeling like 'golf only, all day, every day'.

Who is this for?
Golfers who want a Scottish resort base with easy access to Crieff and Gleneagles, plus enough on-site facilities to keep non-golfers happy.

Who is it best for?
Societies and mixed-ability groups doing a 2–4 night break who want one 'headline' day at Gleneagles, straightforward golf logistics, spa time and flexible room or lodge options.

Accommodation at Crieff Hydro

Crieff Hydro has 215 hotel bedrooms plus 55 self-catering lodges, apartments and cabins, so it's well set up for everything from couples' weekends to society trips. Standard rooms include satellite TV, private bathroom, a work desk and tea and coffee facilities, with décor that's smart and comfortable rather than overly formal.

You can book singles and doubles, interconnecting family rooms if you're travelling with kids, plus larger rooms designed with groups in mind. If you're staying longer or travelling in a bigger party, the lodges and cabins are worth a look, with some sleeping up to 16. They're handy for golfers who want a bit more space, plus the flexibility of your own kitchen for early breakfasts, post-round snacks or keeping the costs predictable for a group.

You've got a good spread of dining options on site, which makes planning easy when the weather turns or the group can't agree on where to eat. The Meikle Restaurant is the main sit-down option, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner with Scottish and international dishes and an emphasis on seasonal produce. It's a solid choice for a 'proper meal' after golf without feeling too stiff.

For something more relaxed, the Terrace Bar & Restaurant covers the crowd-pleasers and a few international staples, while The Hub is geared towards lighter bites, sandwiches and coffees during the day, ideal between activities or if you're keeping it simple.

On the drinks side, the Winter Garden is a calm spot for a pre-dinner drink, while the Victorian Bar leans more traditional and is the natural shout for a pint or a whisky. Between the restaurants, bars and casual dining spots, you've got plenty of options to suit different moods, group sizes and appetites throughout your stay.

This hotel is in sore need of a facelift. The room is basic, a bit worn and tattered. As a positive, the original room we were assigned had virtually no internet reception. They accommodated us by changing our room, but to an incredibly noisy location with kids running up and down the hallway at all hours. One night, as we were watching a movie in our room, suddenly the picture went black (although the sound continued). They provide no soap for the shower. There really were no amenities. They did not clean the room everyday (although they should have) so we had to ask. The restaurants were OK but nothing special (although they made a good pizza!). In sum, as to this hotel: keep your expectations low.

Fantastic stay at the Crieff Hydro, helpful staff, attentive to all requests. Amazing facilities on offer, couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay.
