El Bosque is one of the elite group of early creations devised by the great Robert Trent Jones during his Spanish jaunt of the 1960s and 1970s.
Along with the monumental associates like Sotogrande, Las Brisas and Valderrama, El Bosque helps to define the Iberian imprint made by golf’s most celebrated modern course designer.
The course has recently been renovated, with a huge investment of over €3.5 million. The work was supervised by Cabell B. Robinson and he has ensured the course has remained true to the original design.

Opened in 1975, the same year that the great Valderrama came was gifted to the golfing world, El Bosque is a classic layout that remains one of Spain’s most celebrated courses. The pine-ridden landscape north of Chiva is the basis for El Bosque, which is a test of golfing strategy and skill.
Measuring less than 7,000 yards, El Bosque cannot be compared to the monstrous new courses that typify the contemporary design era, but Trent Jones’ extraordinary reputation was not founded on creating long layouts that merely test the ball striking of visiting golfers. Rather, RTJ used his great subtlety and guile to manufacture an extraordinary challenge, and one which deserves to be held in the upper echelons of European golf.

Very enjoyable members course. For the men in our party the only disappointment was that almost all the various men's tees on almost all holes were closed for maintenance, so we had to play off very forward tees - probably shortened the course by some 600-700 yards for us compared with regular visitor tees. The ladies were off the tees they would have used anyway. Fairways were broad, rough was not quite benign and, other than in the water, there were few places to lose balls. The design, especially around water features was really good, requiring precise distance control on some approach shots. Plenty of elevation through the course, without it being a mountain climb. Certainly OK to walk, though electric trolleys made that a lot easier. Nice clubhouse, terrace and bar overlooking the 1st/18th. Got round both times in under 4 hours....maybe course less busy than usual because of the tees maintenance though?
