This is a testament to the quality of the layout conceived by Robert Trent Jones Senior, who also penned the plans for Valderrama along the road. Sotogrande is very much a private members' club, but the limited number of visitors to advance down the hallowed first fairway is extremely welcome.
Trent Jones used his considerable imagination and guile to create a test that would stand up to the attack of the most talented players, utilising the majestic pine, cork, oak and eucalyptus trees that populate the landscape in particular. The designer also positioned his bunkers and water hazards deftly around the greens, most of which are elevated, demanding unerring accuracy to threaten the pin.
Though not especially long by today's gargantuan standards Sotogrande is a subtle test that is still relevant for the professional game; the demand for creativity and imagination were deemed enough to host the final stages of European Tour between 1998 and 2001.
The course remains a gem within what is already a rich golfing area, and is, without doubt, one of the most desirable courses to experience anywhere in Europe.

Ranked 4/4 of the courses we played. Quickest greens I have ever played, and they were true. The layout was just not really memorable, compared to the other courses. Happy to have played the course, but not a course I would travel back to for another round.

The least friendly course we played. Paired up with a pair of great guys from Malmo. Par 3s all too long, 200+ yards on yellows. Otherwise flat and open. Turf around the greens was very loose, making chipping almost impossible. 8 minute tee times too short and course was rammed.

Not especially welcoming. Practice ground in surprisingly poor condition. Significant work being done on paths over the first 6 or 7 holes with lots of workmen and earth movement which detracted from the conditioning of this section and the aesthetics. Fully understand these things need to go on but would have appreciated being told (in contrast playing La Reserva a few years ago when also undergoing some work, we received a very significant discount to be spent in the pro-shop. The gesture was great PR and was greatly appreciated). The rest of the course was absolutely fine and very enjoyable and challenging. Super greens. Very quiet day so quicker than average round.

Pretty course. Wide open. Some water on a few holes. Probably a good place to rebuild your confidence if the other courses have given you a beating! Sadly I’m not convinced that your enjoyment of golf is of any interest here. We watched an empty first tee for about 20 minutes after being told we could not get out as a 2 ball any earlier than our agreed time. We were paired up with 2 great guys but I don’t think one of them had played much. Consequently we were getting chased by the Marshall after only 3 holes even though we completed our round in not much over 4 hours. We walked it. Nice place, good pro shop, great food in the clubhouse but not nearly the test that the other courses provide. I would not go back.

Excellent golf course. Unfortunately the greens had been sanded recently and so were not in great condition. Our timings were probably unfortunate. The Caddy Master's staff were fantastic, cleaning the clubs, putting them in the coach etc.
