Fancourt South Africa

Excellent See all 58 reviews

Since opening in the early 1990's, Fancourt has developed at an incredible pace, and is now firmly entrenched in the elite of world golf resorts. Only 7 kilometres from the George Airport, and situated right in the heart of the Garden Route, Fancourt couldn't be more perfectly located to enjoy a world-class golfing holiday.

Gary Player's 27 holes were the foundations of the golf resort at its inauguration and Fancourt now boasts 3 first class championship courses making the estate's golf complex the envy of the African continent.

The headline golf course at Fancourt is The Links, which has previously hosted European Tour events and rightfully is currently ranked as the number 2 golf course in South Africa. The 2 remaining courses, the Montagu and Outeniqua, still boast a high ranking within South Africa, presenting two stunning parkland layouts to enjoy for all golfers.

Golf Courses at Fancourt South Africa

Links Course

Owner Dr. Hasso Plattner commissioned the legendary Gary Player to add the Links to Fancourt's existing layouts, and upon completion, the layout became an instant classic. Player's love of seaside golf spurred him to study his favourite coastal layouts of the UK and Ireland, and their influence is plainly visible.

The demanding Links can be extended to a mighty 7,625 yards from the tees used for the 2003 Presidents Cup and the 2005 South African Open, but rest assured there are tees to suit the mere mortal. The Links is now one of the world's most celebrated courses, certainly one of the best in South Africa, and is a ‘must play' for serious golfers.

Montagu Course

Fancourt's Montagu Course has in the past been ranked as South Africa's best, but with the inception of the Links in 2000, it appeared slightly dated. That is why the management implemented a thorough overhaul that involved major renovations, including the addition of two new holes. The resultant parkland layout - 7,385 yards - is once again celebrated in South Africa and beyond, and its spectacular holes will be remembered for a long time to come by fortunate Fancourt visitors.

Outeniqua Course

The Outeniqua takes its name from the dramatic mountain range that guards over the Fancourt estate, and was also conceived by Gary Player. Its character is similar to the neighbouring Montagu layout, with immaculate fairways and greens carved through the rugged dunes and expanses of water that characterise the landscape.

In addition to its comprehensive academy, these amazing courses are truly awe-inspiring, which is why golf holidays at Fancourt are so sought after.

If your game is need of fine tuning, head to the comprehensive Taylor Made Performance Lab, where the experts will leave you with no excuse for bad shots!

The Manor House was established in 1847 when Henry Fancourt set up a base for workers constructing the Montagu Pass, and is now a national monument. Located near the heart of the Fancourt estate, the Manor House is home to 34 charming bedrooms, which blend the traditional charm of the house with the modern facilities required of a good hotel. The resort's Garden Suites and Studios offer outstanding accommodation, courtesy of 1, 2 or 3 bedroom units, all set in a peaceful garden environment. Old World charm is complemented by excellent contemporary amenities in the private suites, every one of which is perfectly tailored to guarantee an amazing golf holiday at South Africa's greatest modern resort.

Food & Drink

Fancourt has four separate restaurants, offering a fine range of cuisine from all over the world. The steaks in the Grill Room and the African flavours in Sansibar are among the highlights while Henry White’s combines local flavours with modern cuisines to produce a true masterclass while in an elegant, flamboyant setting.

Leisure Facilities

The Fancourt Spa combines professional service with the ultimate in relaxation therapy, where the best health and beauty treatments are available, all under the gaze of the Outeniqua Mountains. A heated Roman bath, sauna, steam room, cold plunge pool, tepidarium and a jacuzzi.

In terms of activity, Fancourt has a superb gym, four tennis courts, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, and volleyball courts, while the magnificent estate is best viewed from the running, cycling and hiking trails. There is very little to say other than excellent about probably the best golf estate in South Africa. Everything was top class. We missed eating in their fine dinning restaurant, Henry Wines due to their internal communication but the management handle this in a very fair to ensure we were compensated. Without hesitation will return.

From the moment we arrived we were treated like royalty. The car was parked for us, clubs placed in secure area ready for the first round the following day. Sparkling wine or water whilst we did the formalities at reception. Then whisked off in a club cart to our rooms. All the restaurants were good , the White restaurant the best and incredible value.

The estate is well managed and the facilities are second-to-none. Food at the Henry White and Monet restaurant were exceptional. The evening meal at the Italian style restaurant was poor and not up to the standard expected for Fancourt.

We really enjoyed playing Pinnacle Point (what a spectacular course!), Goose Valley and Simola. Our visit to Fancourt was a great way to finish off our trip. We had a very good sized room and bathroom and a short walk from the main hotel and clubhouse. Although the weather was a bit mixed we thoroughly enjoyed our games on Montagu and Outeniqua. The game at The Links was the icing on the cake. It’s a fantastic course, we had lovely weather, good caddies and good company - it was the high point of the holiday!

We played this course after "The Links" and thought it would be slightly easier. It is not, very tight and plenty of water. The course management again encourage bird life and we lost count of the varieties that made the various water hazards their home. The 18th is a great finishing hole with a challenging shot over water to a sloping green in front of the club house. We may have lost a few balls but really enjoyed the course.

What a course. No 1 is South Africa. Will never play a better course. A real challenge from all tees. It was magnificent. it was almost a kin to a nature reserve interspersed by a golf course. The birds, wild life and scenery were just wonderful. A must to play for any golfer. Expensive but well, well worth it.

This is a very good golf course that can be played by all standard of golfers. We decided to walk the course with push trollies. A mistake, far harder than our home course and would recommend you take a buggy. It helped being paired with two members who knowing the course made for a very pleasant round. This is probably the easier of the courses a Fancourt but still a challenge.

We were apprehensive about the course as it was quoted as being the number 1 course in South Africa and you were required to take a caddy. However it turned out to be one of the most memorable and enjoyable days on a golf course. The caddies gave us some coaching on the practice range and useful tips around the course. They made us feel very welcome and relaxed. The caddy master even offered us a malt whisky on the first tee !

What a course. The whole experience was a dream, spoilt only by the lack of reception at the end of the round on the 18th green: no hot towel and no refreshing drink was provided. Despite my best efforts the Caddy was difficult to talk to and showed little interest in my game.
