Originally founded in 1906, Fulford Golf Club moved to its current home in 1935, with the course planned and built by Major Charles MacKenzie, brother and business partner of Dr Alister MacKenzie. Just outside the historic centre of York, it's one of Yorkshire's standout heathland tests and a club that's happy to welcome visitors. It also has proper pedigree, having hosted the R&A Girls U16 Amateur Championship in 2020.
Fulford is a cracking example of classic heathland golf. The sandy base helps it drain well and, in the right conditions, you'll get that firm, running game you want from this style of course. Expect smart bunkering, gentle elevation shifts and a layout that rewards accuracy and good decisions more than sheer power. There's room from the tee if you're swinging well, but the best scores come from controlling your angles into greens that are well defended. Get out of position and you'll be relying on tidy pitching and bunker play to save par.
Fulford celebrated its centenary in 2006 and it's earned its place among the best heathland golf courses around. If you're building a York-based break or ticking off the best golf courses in Yorkshire, this one is well worth a slot in the itinerary.
Who is this for?
Golfers looking for a high-quality heathland experience in Yorkshire, particularly those who appreciate strategic design, classic architecture and a welcoming club atmosphere. It's ideal for groups, societies and individuals who want to play a championship course without the stuffiness that sometimes comes with it.
Who is it best for?
Best for golfers who like thinking their way round, especially mid to low handicappers. Higher handicaps will still enjoy it if you play within yourself and treat it as a positional course rather than a driver-everywhere day.

During your York golf tour, you will enjoy a course that was devised by Major Charles Mackenzie, brother of golf's most revered architect, Dr. Alister. Fulford now reflects the move to the present site in 1930 - in preparing for the move, the club sought the advice of the legendary James Braid to choose a suitable site.
The course has in the past hosted some prestigious professional events; who could forget the image of a youthful Bernhard Langer hoisted 20 feet up a tree to play his third shot to the 17th during the 1981 Benson & Hedges International Open?
This European Tour venue is no longer on the regular roster, but it remains one of the best loved traditional golf clubs in the north, and is the perfect option for a golf tour of York.

The best of the three courses and the hardest, too hard for some of our players, but would definitely play it again.
