In the last 10+ years there have been some outstanding new links courses popping up in Scotland. In the unique coastal corner of the Mull of Kintyre, a genuine championship links course can be found. While there are some 32,000 golf courses worldwide, only 270 of those can truly be classed as links.
The astonishing Machrihanish Dunes, which opened in 2009, was added to this elite collection.

On a parcel of land first recognised for its golfing potential by Old Tom Morris more than 130 years ago, his vision has been realised by David McLay Kidd, the precocious course architect made famous by his creations at Bandon Dunes, Oregon and the Castle Course, St Andrews.
Kidd said that natural terrain produced 23 ‘natural holes' at Machrihanish Dunes, a course firmly entrenched in the Top 100 in the UK, meaning that minimal work is required in constructing the hole, and the designer needed only to choose his favourite 18. Measuring 7,300 yards, Machrihanish Dunes will feature six greens and five tees on the water's edge, making this one of the most spectacular new golfing experiences in the world.
Visitors to Machrihanish Dunes can choose from two high quality hotels offering a full array of first class amenities. The award-winning Ugadale Hotel and Cottages in Machrihanish offer 22 rooms and suites and eight two bedroom self-catering cottages.
The Ugadale Hotel is home to the Kintyre Club Restaurant and The Serenity Spa. The Old Clubhouse Pub is only steps from the hotel and cottages.
The Royal Hotel in Campbeltown provides 23 rooms and is home to The Harbourview Grille and The Black Sheep Pub.

As above. The lack of facilities is not a problem as the basics are catered for.

Played here before. Course is too difficult and unforgiven. Staff were bit rude. We decided to stop playing after 14 as weren’t enjoying. Great potential but course to difficult

Excellent golf course and Lorna and Peter were very welcoming. Tough track but that is how it should be and some very quirky holes.

Superb course great practice facilities and wonderfully warm and friendly staff. I would choose Machrihanish Dunes over Machrihanish and I’d go as far as to say it’s one of the best most enjoyable courses I’ve ever played. Visually interesting, several testing blind shots and terrific views up and down the course and the beach and shore line.

Wasn't prepared for the weather. Wind made the course difficult. Lost quite a few golf balls. Would liked to have played twice. Would have definitely scored better. Great use of the landscape in the design, with great natural links holes.

A totally different but just as good experience to the more famous course up the road - my father preferred this one - say's he's never seen greens like them, a brilliantly designed and executed natural course.

A very enjoyable course, ideal for our handicap level ( mid teens) with generous fairways and very tricky greens. There is quite a walk from green to tee which might not suit some people but, personally, I loved it, walking amidst stunning sand dunes.

Great course but some long walks between green and tee.Facilities are extremely poor for such a classic golf course , no food lack of choice no draught beer only cans at extortionate costs and small clubhouse closed before most of golfers had completed round

Fantastic old fashioned links course. Gives you more room off the tee.

Absolutely amazing true links course with spectacular views. Totally natural landscape makes you feel as though you have gone back in time. V friendly golf house staff. Worth the long journey to the southern tip of the Mull of Kintyre.

Really a fantastic course, very quirky; Clubhouse (if you could call it that) very spartan, one person there just on cover - and all closed upon return. This lets the place down.

Greens were poor for a course of such high standing and there were quite a few blind shots over posts. Nice course and I’m glad I’ve played it but not as good as I was expecting.

TrueType natural course. Challenging but slightly easier than the old course next door.
