Northumberland Golf Club

Northumberland Golf Club sits next to the Newcastle Marriott Hotel in Gosforth Park, just north of Newcastle city centre, so it's a handy pick if you want a quality round without faffing about with travel. Better still, you can be back in town quickly for dinner, drinks and a proper night out in the Toon.

The club is rightly well regarded, with a classic parkland layout shaped by two of the game's big names, Harry Colt and James Braid. If you're the sort of golfer who enjoys plotting your way round rather than simply bashing driver, you'll like it here. In my opinion, it's at its best when you commit to position off the tee and trust your irons into well-defended greens.

Expect mature, tree-lined fairways, gentle elevation changes and bunkering that's placed to catch the slightly lazy shot. It's not unfair, but it will nudge you into thinking about angles, especially on the more exposed holes when the breeze gets up. The course rewards accuracy and course management over raw power, which makes it a proper test for mid to low handicappers without being punishing for those still finding their game.

For golf breaks, the location does a lot of the heavy lifting. Stay at the Marriott, play a strong course in the morning and you're only minutes from the heart of Newcastle afterwards. Ideal for a weekend with mates, a society day or a short UK golf break built around golf plus nightlife.

Northumberland Golf Club

The relatively flat heathland is characteristic of both Colt and Braid, who between them are responsible for some of the UK#s very best traditional courses. The neighbouring nature reserve ensures that there is abundant wildlife including deer, while the 6,683 yard championship course is a stern test for every visitor.

Used for many prestigious amateur tournaments, Northumberland is a hidden gem which comes highly recommended for any golfer visiting the Newcastle-upon-Tyne area.

Lovely course. Many of us had never played a course within a Horse racing track.Club house was lovely and the staff were friendly

Really enjoyed this golf course, 1st and 18th are played into and over a dip but the rest is flat but unlike the Filly Course at Close House is just brilliant golf, especially around the greens with the bunkers and runoffs, we arrived at 9,20 for our tee time of 9,50 to be told that our tee time had been moved to 9,20 (thank you yourgolftravel for not informing us) but the secretary moved us to 10,40 and gave us some range balls to fill the the time, class course and class friendly people

Unusual course . Clubhouse large but no pro shop. Driving range available. Looks great and interesting from the first tee but becomes a little underwhelming with all the holes inside a racecourse . Easy to walk

Lovely course, a bit confusing sometimes going across the race track. There wasn't many flat fairways, greens where a challenge to read.

This course was the worst course unfortunately. Minimal facilities and On a Tuesday afternoon shared with the racing at the racecourse which meant we were unable to play the full course having to use the winter holes finally getting to the 18th tee and having to wait 25 minutes for a horse race ruined the final hole. Signage needs improving to see where the tee boxes are for some holes.
