Based in Palm Beach Gardens on Florida's Atlantic coast, PGA National Resort & Spa is a proper bucket-list venue with five championship courses on site, led by The Champion. This is the course used for the Cognizant Classic each year, and it's also hosted the Ryder Cup and the PGA Championship, so you'll be following in the footsteps of some serious names. The other four courses, The Fazio, The Match, The Palmer and The Estate, are no afterthoughts either, each one a championship-calibre layout in its own right.
Located just 90 minutes north of Miami International Airport, it's an easy first or last stop for UK golfers flying into Florida. All 339 guest rooms and suites have been newly renovated, blending modern sophistication with the lush, tropical surroundings of South Florida. Off the course, the Spa at PGA National has a big reputation locally and is regularly talked about as one of the stand-out spas in Palm Beach County. If you're after the ultimate Florida golf resort experience, this is where you start.

The Champion Course is the backbone of PGA National's outstanding golfing heritage, originally designed by Tom Fazio and his uncle George it was subsequently reworked by Jack Nicklaus in 2014.
A top class tournament venue, the Champion joined the ranks of courses to have hosted a Ryder Cup when it played host to the 1983 Ryder Cup matches and also hosted the 1987 PGA Championship, while it is now the annual home of the US Tour's Honda Classic. The treacherous closing holes have been dubbed ‘The Bear Trap', and are among the most difficult in the state.
The Champion course at PGA National is ranked as one of the best courses in Florida
Cognizant Classic
The annual Cognizant Classic sees the start of the PGA Tour's Florida swing, which is a series of three tournaments played in the sunshine state.

The Fazio Course was the first to be completed at the PGA National Resort, and was designed by George & Tom Fazio. The main challenge around the 6,806 yard layout comes from Fazio's strategic position of his water hazards, demanding a combination of both power and accuracy. Water comes into play on 15 holes on the Fazio course, which was originally called The Haig, named after the legendary Walter Hagen, an unprecedented winner in golf's early years.

The Palmer Course was designed by Arnold Palmer, whose aggressive attitude towards playing the game is reflected in his creation at PGA National. The fairways are forgiving and the greens large, but with the prevalence of huge water hazards, attacking play comes with considerable risks. The best hole is the daunting par 5 last, which is a real all or nothing test.

Originally designed as The Squire over 30 years ago, Staples Golf Design has completely renovated the golf course. It has been designed to appeal to both avid golfers and casual players, the Match allows beginners a place to learn and even non-golfers a place to practice.
The Match Course is a classic 18-hole layout inspired by some of the most celebrated holes in golf history. The course allows golfers to engage in some type of “match” play, be it best ball, foursomes or even skins. Creative approaches and strategic chipping areas present multiple options for trajectory and strategy around the green. Hazards are minimal, with fewer than 20 natural rough-hewn, irregular-edged bunkers in play to keep things fun!

The Estate Course is PGA National's fifth, and is located a couple of miles outside the boundaries of the resort. Amid the verdant Florida landscape, the Estate offers a distinctly different experience to its siblings, but is well worth visiting during your golf holiday pilgrimage to Florida.

Described as a fun little nine built by the visionary golf course architect, Andy Staple,. The course consists of 9 holes of pure, rollicking fun filled holes ranging from 60-130 yards and featuring a variety of unique undulations, funneling shots, and in some cases, difficult-to-reach shelves.
Originally designed as The Squire in 1983 by the design duo of Tom and George Fazio, the redesign plan by Andy Staples of Staples Golf Design completely renovated the course, while expanding its appeal to both the avid golfer and casual player, as well as beginners and even non-golfers.
The result is a course where each hole is playable by using only a putter, leave your driver and long irons behind, have some fun and make sure to stop off for a drink at the cafe/bar area complete with firepit.
Set within the prestigious Palm Beach Gardens development, PGA National's reputation is built on personalised service and attention to detail. The 339 guest rooms and suites have all been recently renovated, featuring Asian maple wood furnishings, marble and granite bathrooms, high-speed internet, flat-screen satellite televisions, deluxe bedding and bathrobes. It's the kind of place where the little touches make a difference, from the quality of the linens to the way the rooms are laid out to catch the best of the Florida light.
For added luxury and privacy, you can upgrade to one of the resort's Club Cottages, two-bedroom lodges tucked away in the quieter corners of the property. These are perfect for families or small groups wanting a bit more space and seclusion, with separate living areas and a more residential feel than the main hotel rooms. If you're travelling with non-golfers or planning a longer stay, the cottages give you room to spread out without losing access to all the resort facilities.
The rooms themselves are designed to feel fresh and modern without being overly corporate. You get proper work desks if you need them, generous bathrooms with separate showers and tubs in many of the suites, and views over either the golf courses or the resort's tropical gardens. It's comfortable, well thought out and built for guests who are here to relax as much as they are to play.
For UK groups, it works brilliantly as a long-weekend base, with easy airport access, on-site nightlife and enough course variety to play a different track every day without leaving the resort. The layout of the property means you're never far from the clubhouse, the spa or one of the restaurants, and there's a real sense that everything has been designed around making a golf trip as straightforward as possible. You don't need to hire a car or plan complicated logistics, you just turn up, check in and get on with enjoying the golf.
The Bear Trap Bar & Grill is the go-to spot after your round, serving cold beers and classic American burgers while you replay the day's highlights. It's relaxed, informal and usually busy with golfers doing exactly that, so it's a good place to swap stories and compare scorecards. For something more refined, head to Sienna's, the resort's Tuscan-themed restaurant, or the Ironwood Grille, which specialises in fresh seafood and coastal flavours. Both offer a step up in dining quality and atmosphere, ideal for evening meals or celebrating a good score.
Beyond golf and dining, the resort is built around total relaxation. The Spa at PGA National is founded on the restorative powers of water and offers everything from massages to full wellness programmes, with a menu that's as comprehensive as you'll find anywhere in the region. If you're more active off the course, the 33,000-square-foot Health and Racquet Club includes a comprehensive fitness suite, scheduled pilates and yoga classes, 19 tennis courts, racquetball and handball courts, a lap pool, plunge pool, running tracks and whirlpools. It's a resort designed to let you unwind completely, whether that's poolside with a book or working up a sweat on the tennis court.
PGA National allows you to follow in the footsteps of legends. Some of the game's greatest names have graced these fairways for the Ryder Cup, PGA Championship and the Honda Classic, and now it's your turn.
Getting there: The resort is located in Palm Beach Gardens on Florida's southeast coast, conveniently accessible from several airports. Palm Beach International Airport is just 20 minutes away, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International is an hour, and Miami International is an hour and 15 minutes.
