Tucked into the legendary Sandwich Bay trio of Open Championship hosts alongside Royal St George's and Royal Cinque Ports, Prince's Golf Club is a proper links that sits at the very heart of British golf. While it may not carry quite the same household name as its neighbours, Prince's remains one of England's finest tests of seaside golf, a championship layout that rewards strategy, shot-making and a bit of local knowledge.

The course runs through striking sand dunes on Kent's east coast, offering 27 holes of genuine links golf across three distinct loops. The Himalayas 9 and short game area add even more variety to the experience, making Prince's a venue where you can happily spend multiple days without repeating a hole. It's a brilliant option for UK golfers chasing championship golf in a quieter, less formal setting than some of the bigger names nearby.

The turf is firm, the wind is always a factor and the angles off the tee matter more than brute force. You'll find plenty of those "take your medicine" moments that make links golf so addictive, with enough variety across the three loops to keep things fresh whether you're playing two rounds or five. If you're travelling with a mixed-ability group, the short game area is ideal for warming up or sharpening your touch before taking on the heavy hitters next door.

Who is this for?
Golfers planning a Kent links break who want 27 holes on-site and two Open rota neighbours within minutes.

Who is it best for?
Four-balls and societies who like strategic links golf, a relaxed club atmosphere and a lodge where everything is built around golfers.

Golf Courses at Prince's Golf Club

Prince's Golf Club is a rare golf links gem with three loops of nine holes. The Shore, Dunes and Himalayas courses provide a memorable golf trip experience that sits proudly within the Top 50 Golf Courses in England.

As a past host of not only The Open Championship but also of numerous key professional events and most recently as co-host of The Amateur Championship in 2017 and 2013, Prince's Golf Club is a course that can provide a mighty challenge for the very best golfers, whilst providing a playable test off the yellows for the many who visit for a golf break in Kent each year.

Henry Cotton and Gene Sarazen are not only among the game’s greatest names, but are also at the head of the lengthy line of Prince’s admirers; among the accolades these golfing legends bestowed were “the greatest links course” and “Britain’s finest course”.

The layout itself is a classic seaside course in character, reflecting the inherent features of the local terrain. The humps, bumps and hollows created by the Kent coastline’s myriad of sand dunes are heaven-sent for golf, and course architect Charles Hutchings (1902 Amateur Champion) took full advantage.

Prince’s, like its visiting golfers, is always at the mercy of the elements, and the character of the golf course can alter dramatically with the wind. Rugged and unpretentious, Prince’s is pure links golf, and is without doubt one of the country’s brightest gems.

Prince's Golf Club is ranked as one of the best courses in London and the South East

The Shore Course

The Shore course is the longest of the three 9 hole loops and as the name suggests, it follows along the shoreline south towards the lodge which is located at the entrance of the course.

Accommodation at Prince's Golf Club

The Lodge at Prince's Golf Club turns the venue into an easy, golfer-friendly stay-and-play. With 38 bedrooms plus Bay and Links Suites, it's become a popular base for couples, four-balls and societies looking to play Prince's and tick off the other Sandwich Bay icons without changing hotels.

Location-wise, it doesn't get much better. The Lodge sits by the club's main entrance and looks out towards the 13th green at Royal St George's, which gives you a pretty good idea of the neighbourhood you're in. You can step straight onto Prince's 27 holes and you're only a short drive from Royal Cinque Ports and St George's for a proper Kent links tour.

Inside, it's got that classic dormy-house feel, comfortable, straightforward and geared around golf. Facilities include the Brasserie on The Bay Restaurant, a relaxed lounge bar, a sun terrace with course views and a snooker room for something to do once the scores are in. Food is hearty and well done, ideal after a breezy day on the dunes.

Rooms are set up with golfers in mind too. There are interconnecting options that work well for groups travelling together, while the larger suites give you extra space, separate lounge areas and proper storage for clubs and kit. Depending on where you're placed, you'll have sea views or golf views, and either way you're only ever a short walk from the first tee.

The real appeal of The Lodge is its location. You're staying right in the middle of the action, with access to three of the finest links courses in the country all within a few minutes. It's a great base if you're taking on all three Sandwich Bay courses in one trip, offering quality accommodation, excellent food and the kind of relaxed, golfer-friendly atmosphere that makes a long weekend feel like a proper escape.

If you're planning a Kent links break, it's hard to beat this as a base. Speak to the team and we'll help you build a Prince's stay with the right mix of rounds, nearby must-plays and tee times that suit your group.

Hotel and staff are great. It is looking a bit tired but that does not detract from the overall experience.

The clubhouse and facilities are excellent but the Lodges were very tired and needed a thorough update including painting. The Restaurant and bar are expensive and the food average at best.

We stayed at Princes in April and the venue certainly did not disappoint. The rooms were comfortable, well appointed, and thoughtfully equipped with plenty of amenities. We were fortunate to have superb views from our room, overlooking the 6th green and the far end of the Shore and Dunes nines, with a glimpse of Royal St George’s thrown in for good measure. Although located in a more remote corner of Kent, the Lodge offers more than enough to keep you entertained in the evening, with excellent food, a welcoming bar, and sport shown on TV. The food and drink were very good overall; the only disappointment arose from a mix-up regarding our dining arrangements. We had been advised by Princes that dinner was included on both evenings, so we cancelled our booking in Deal. Halfway through the meal, however, we were informed this had been a mistake. While the meal was discounted, we would have preferred clarity in advance, as we would otherwise have gone out that evening. That aside, Princes is a superb choice for golfers, offering a comfortable stay in a truly first-class golfing region.

Very comfortable stay. Only small issue being the restaurant noise levels in the evening due to room acoustics.

Golf is always great at Princes, whatever the weather! Course as usual was perfect. Staff seemed really impatient at both the lodge and the bar. They are dealing with big groups and whatever we asked they seemed to be annoyed and quite rude. The bar staff in the lodge were really nice, the rest not so much. The food was generally poor and that was feedback from a large usually unfussy group. Basically poor pub grub. Rooms nice, and all in all it’s good value but the golf makes up for it!

All 3 9’s were in great condition. Testing but not too hard that you felt beat up. Overall great experience

Very tricky courses with punishment if the ball goes through the first cut of rough. Grass extremely long, very difficult to find the ball and no chance of getting it out of the rough if you do find it. So keep it on the fairway I hear you say. Overall very good courses an an enjoyable trip.

We played over Saturday and Sunday, enjoying a different 18-hole combination each day, which really showcased the variety across the three nines. Saturday paired the Dunes and Himalayas, while Sunday combined the Shore and Dunes, and it was the latter that emerged as the clear favourite across the group. The Dunes nine sits nicely in between the others, with several strong, testing holes and a rhythm you’d happily play every day. The Himalayas is full of interest and visual drama, with bold greens and plenty of character, particularly following the recent Mackenzie & Ebert work, which has sharpened its strategic intent. However, it was the Shore that really stole the show. Exposed, firm and wonderfully natural, it feels the most authentic and traditional links of the three, with several holes that you could imagine on any top coastal course in the UK or Ireland. Paired with the Dunes, it produced a superb, flowing 18 holes and was rightly the preferred routing. Each nine has its own standout moments and, taken together, there’s an even stronger eclectic 18 to be found. Conditioning was generally very good, although the bunkers did contain a few pebbles and stones, and some tee boxes showed signs of heavy use. Overall, though, the quality, variety and true links feel—particularly on the Shore—made for an immensely enjoyable golf weekend.
