The Hotchkin Course is not only the best golf course away from the coast, it is also ranked second overall in England. A number of key moments have influenced the development of this remarkable course; Harry Vardon's original 1905 design was reworked just before the Great War by Harry S. Colt, before the English Golf Union bought the site in 1995.
The firm heathland turf is the basis for the Hotchkin's character, where the majestic holes are lined by towering birch pine and broom. The predominant hazards, apart from the woodland, is the bunkering; around the greens in particular, the Hotchkin is known for its cavernous sand traps.
This inland gem is without doubt a classic, and deserves its incredible reputation; any serious golfer should make a golf break at Woodhall Spa a high priority.
The Hotchkin Course at Woodhall Spa is ranked as one of the best courses in England

Donald Steel's remarkable vision for the Bracken Course has been realised with dramatic effect. Although it neighbours the Hotchkin, Steel's creation is vastly different; the undulating greens and proliferation of water are more akin to golf in America, but the Bracken adds much to the character of Woodhall Spa, and is a key part of its golf break experience.

Keep out of the Heather and it's playable but, you have to hit a straight ball!

We were a bit lucky with the weather, expecting a lot of rain which didn't materialize. The layout of the course is excellent, the greens were good with a lot of contours, and a good pace. Fairways were in excellent condition. Overall a great day.

The course was in excellent condition and the greens were the best we've played this year. The heather was a sensible length. The bunkers were a bit inconsistent with the depth and quality of the sand. Quite a few large stones in some.

Great course. Not too long, greens are undulating and big! Great condition.

✓30 Jun 2025
Similar to the Hotchkin, the bunkers were poor for the home of England Golf. The course was interesting with some nice holes and I enjoyed it more than the Hotchkin even though I didn’t score so well. Again, a well stocked half way house - much needed in the heat we had. The greens weren’t as quick but very undulating which didn’t detract from the overall enjoyment.
Greg
✓30 Jun 2025
The overall condition was ok, like all other courses it is struggling with the weather. The bunkers were shocking for a course rated so highly and a bit of a disappointment. Greens were nice and quick and the fairways fiery. Great halfway house that had a good selection of food and drink.

A great golfing challenge and very difficult if you don’t clear the Heather which is in front of many tee boxes. Relatively flat greens which are fast and fair. Don’t go in the bunkers!

✓15 Apr 2025
Unbelievable course, visually scary on some holes but every hole was perfectly picturesque, i have never seen a course in such good condition in April in the UK. It was very difficult in places but fair and scoreable in others, pace of play was fine with no long waits or multiple groups on any tee at once which is always a good sign that it's not being overfilled just for extra money they do want you to have a great days golf on a great course and have a great experience from arriving to leaving
Jason
✓15 Apr 2025
The course was great with some very challenging holes but a nice variety of holes and the condition was fantastic for April. We were not waiting at any point during the round on the Bracken and the starter was very welcoming aswell. The facilities on site were very good aswell to get warmed up befor your round, if I was to pick 1 thing to improve the greens on the short game practice area were not the same as on the course (corse were slightly softer and more responsive to spin) but they were still very very good. the green complexs on this course are a amazing. From a value for money looking at the normal prices not going through your golf travel at the same time they were in line so I would say it was worth what we paid for the trip

This Golf Course is over rated. its good but not as good as the hype suggests...You need to play this course several times to get to know it, you cannot see the course from the tee, most tee shots are blind. You will need a yardage book to know where to aim.

✓10 Jun 2024
A really great course. A good challenge, but slightly less penal than the Hotchkin from tee to green, one gets a bit more forgiveness because the bunkers are less severe and it is a bit more open compared to the tight heather. The greens are immaculate and very undulating which is where the challenge starts. Would play again for sure
Kevin
✓10 Jun 2024
Incredible course. Very challenging from tee to green. The heather and bunkers swallow up any stray shots. But it is a magnificent course, the condition is sublime, the greens are sublime. Every hole it interesting and makes you think. Would 100% play there again

✓18 Mar 2024
Unfortunately, after the awful weather we have been experiencing, we had overnight rain on an already wet course. The fairways and around the greens were very very wet, but the greens were exceptional. Cannot help the weather, but glad we got to play it.

✓18 Mar 2024
Starter was friendly. Went out after two groups of England juniors, so it was a bit slower than it should be. But was good to see them play. The greens had recently been cored, so didn’t see them at their best. Bunkers….. stay out! They are hard.
Callum
✓17 Mar 2024
We have never played a wetter golf course, there was no drainage and it’s blatantly obvious no money is spent on the bracken. We were very disappointed with the condition of the fairways and greens, we will certainly not be playing here again.
Callum
✓17 Mar 2024
Me and my father planned our annual golfing trip at Woodhall Spa. The expectations were high playing the 60th ranked course in the world. But we left very disappointed with the condition of the Hotchkin, the greens were very poor and the course was drenched. I was told all the facilities were available to us. However, on arrival we were told all the practice short game area is only available for coaching. Very dissatisfied with the price we paid and I will certainly not be returning.
Peter
✓3 Nov 2023
Completely different experience to the Hotchkin. Very wet underfoot on the fairways, but greens were in good condition. Wide open spaces with main course defence relying on water, strategic bunkers and contours on the greens. You have to think you way round.
Peter

This is a tough track on any day, put some 20 mph winds in and its a really tough track. This is a course for golfers, anyone 18 or above might not get the same level of enjoyment as the bunkers are deep and plenty of them.

A beautiful parkland course. Playable for golfers of all standards. Greens are a great challenge. Quick and you'll be faced with many a swinging putt. Pity we could only play part of the course due to an almighty downpour which made the greens unplayable. Looking forward to playing it again in the future.

The hottest day of the year so far! What a shame. The course was straw coloured other than the greens. Had it not been a trip nine of us would have played. Woodhall Spa had cancelled all member bookings such was the heat. One of my fourball had to finish after nine holes, another fourball called it quits after 15. The heatwave took it out of all of us, such a shame as it is a magnificent experience normally. It was simply survival for me. Staff helpful, came out in a buggy to bring one of the guys in. At least the guys had the experience and will no doubt want to return some day.

We were very disappointed by the slowness of the greens, apparently they had a staff issue and the greens hadn’t been cut on the Sunday morning ?? And we were paying £120 each?! A lot of the bunkers were short of sand as well Considering they were holding a UK Seniors competition on the Monday, we were expecting the course to be much better.
David

✓11 May 2022
A demanding course with bunkers to challenge those that are unfortunate to find themselves in one. Course was is good condition but would improve with a few rain showers. Guy in the shop was helpful and friendly. Would love to play the course again.
Stephen
✓11 May 2022
Very different to the Bracken played the day before. This course had very difficult fairways with far too many bunkers - 180 of them averaging 10 per hole. This added to the difficulty of reaching greens along with the extensive heather lining all the fairways. If you are inconsistent off the Tee with direction you will be in big trouble. Even if you are hitting the ball straight the sheer number of bunkers will catch you out. However, once you reach the greens you will find them forgiving. To compensate for yesterdays malfunctioning buggy I was giving a fully charged buggy FOC. On this course there are hole maps at each Tee box so you had some idea where you needed to go. Also one of my party purchased a house info book for £8 which proved very helpful and I would recommend doing likewise if you are unfamiliar with the course. As a footnote, I was told in the golf shop that Woodhall Spa GC only had single buggies. We all found it odd that we observed two double buggies being used??
Stephen
✓11 May 2022
The Bracken course was challenging. The fairways were not too difficult and in fine condition but the greens, whilst again in fine condition, were very difficult. The contours were difficult to judge for both direction and pace. What was disappointing was that at each tee box there was no map of the hole and no information regarding length or hazards. As a result if you were playing the course for the first time, as we were, you had no idea if each hole was straight or dog-legged right or left. On one hole we had no idea where the green was until we got there!! In advance I had asked for two buggies to be reserved assuming that they would be doubles as is usually the case on all the other courses I have played. However only 2 single buggies were left for my foursome. One of those had no means of securing my bag to it so I took the only remaining buggy. My companions used motorised trolleys. Unfortunately my buggy ran out of power on the 17th and had to be pushed back to the clubhouse! Not good on both counts.

Lovely course again. Poor management by the starter allowing previous tee times to tee off later due to weather which pushed back all other tee times. As a result our groups tee ‘d off 15 mins later and didn’t finish. Play was extremely slow which reduced enjoyment. Course was lovely and a good complement to Hotchkin despite all the rain.
