Aroeira No.1 opened for play in 1973, having been designed by Frank Pennink. Since then, the course has steadily built up an impressive reputation, culminating with the award of the Portuguese Open in 1996 and 1997 and more recently the International Portuguese Amateur Championship Gentlemen & Ladies (2010 & 2011). From the championship tees, Aroeira No.1 reaches 6,609 yards, and set amidst some 900 acres of beautiful pines, is a stunning location for a game of golf.
Signature Hole: Hole 8, Par 3, 190 metres (208 yards) (White Tees), SI 3
The highlight of Aroeira No.1 course is the par 3, eighth hole which amasses to 208 metres. At stroke index 3, this is a particularly challenging hole and requires a long iron to a green with a remarkable inclination, which slopes sharply to the left and is protected by a large bunker on the right.

With the inauguration of the second course in the year 2000, Aroiera was confirmed as one of Portugal's premier golfing destinations. Aroeira No.2 was conceived by Donald Steel, the man responsible for so many outstanding projects both in the UK and abroad, and has been earmarked for future Portuguese Opens. The course winds its way around several lakes, and with a variety of tee markers on offer, it remains playable for golfers of all standards.
Signature Hole: Hole 11, Par 5, 190 metres (208 yards) (White Tees), SI 6
The raised tee on the 11th requires a tee shot onto a narrow fairway with trees on both sides and a slight dogleg to the left. A slight draw would suit this hole well. The approach shot gives a quite stunning view onto a green closely protected by water and bunkers to the front and to the left.
Aroeira has an excellent golf academy, where you can seek the advice of the expert PGA professionals or simply work on a few of the game's finer points.

Fairly standard course and tree line, the website makes it look a lot nicer than it is, it is was slightly up and down and fairly straight holes but a nice venue. Service at the bar was great and they looked after us

The course was in much better condition than no1, and was a more interesting course to play. There is no clubhouse and finding the first tee is somewhat of a mission. We were dropped at the range, only to discover that the 1st tee was a 20 minute walk form there, luckily our driver game back, but during the round we met 4 other groups trudging from the range to the first tee

Not sure if they are working on the course for something in the future, but the greens were terrible, many with new turf laid into parts of them, very weedy and spongy. The fairways were v soft and on a sandy base so in places it was like being in a bunker.

Food service closes at 4pm, which is too early for late morning tees.

Great course & worth the drive from Lisbon. Signage again poor, so if playing the Pines Classic, turn right at the entrance roundabout towards PGA National I. Food & drinking offerings here were better than at the Challenge course. Club sandwich was a 7.5/10. Shower facilities are available and you do get a complimentary towel, but the showers are a trickle and cool.

Great course & worth the journey from Lisbon. Facilities and offerings at the ‘Pro shed’ weren’t great, but are just about to be renovated, we were told. Signage at the main entrance to Aroeira is poor. If you’re playing the Challenge course, go left at the roundabout and look for PGA National II.
