Tucked into a quiet residential pocket just outside Dundee, the Best Western Woodlands Hotel occupies a handsome former mansion house a short walk from the lively waterfront suburb of Broughty Ferry. It's a proper country house base for golfers chasing the big links names along this stretch of the Angus coast, with Carnoustie only 15 minutes up the road and both Panmure Golf Club and Monifieth Links even closer. Dundee city centre, the train station and Dundee Airport are all within a quarter of an hour by car, so you're well placed whether you're flying in, arriving by rail or building a multi-stop tour of Scotland's east coast.
Logistics are straightforward. If you want to pack plenty of golf into a long weekend without spending half your trip in the minibus, this is a smart launchpad. Carnoustie is the headline act, but Panmure and Monifieth are ideal for filling out a three or four-round itinerary without backtracking. Broughty Ferry itself has a good selection of pubs, cafés and seafood spots, all within walking distance of the hotel, and Dundee's V&A museum and waterfront bars are a short drive if you fancy a night out.
If Carnoustie is on the itinerary I'm always happy to have a hotel this close for an early tee time. The Woodlands strikes a nice balance between traditional country house character and the sort of facilities that matter after a long day on the links. There's a proper leisure suite with a pool, steam room, Jacuzzi and gym, the restaurant leans heavily on local produce, and the Lounge Bar does exactly what you want: informal setting, decent range of drinks, and snacks if you're not ready for a full sit-down meal. In summer, the patio tables outside are ideal for a post-round pint in the gardens.

Who is it best for?

Set in mature gardens, the 65-bedroom Best Western Dundee Woodlands Hotel delivers the sort of warm, unpretentious hospitality that makes a golf trip work. Rooms are spread across the main house and offer a mix of doubles, twins and family options, all decorated in a classic country house style with comfortable beds, en-suite bathrooms, tea and coffee facilities, flat-screen TVs and complimentary Wi-Fi. Comfortable, practical and geared for golfers.
The restaurant focuses on locally sourced Scottish produce, with menus built around seasonal ingredients and regional specialities. Breakfast sets you up properly for an early tee time, and evening meals lean towards hearty, well-executed dishes that suit golfers who've spent the day walking 18 holes. If you're not in the mood for a full dinner, the Lounge Bar serves lighter bites, sandwiches and bar snacks in a relaxed setting, with a decent range of beers, spirits and wines. On warmer evenings, grab a table on the patio and enjoy a drink in the gardens.
The leisure facilities are a genuine bonus. The indoor pool is ideal for loosening up after a round, the steam room and Jacuzzi help ease any aches from Carnoustie's deep bunkers, and the gym is there if you want to stay active. It's the sort of setup that adds real value to a golf break, especially if you're playing multiple days or travelling with non-golfers who appreciate having something to do while you're out on the course.
Location-wise, you're perfectly positioned for the Angus links circuit. Carnoustie is 15 minutes away, Panmure and Monifieth are even closer, and you're within easy reach of Dundee's waterfront if you fancy exploring between rounds. Broughty Ferry has plenty of options for food and drink, all within a short walk. It's a solid, well-run base that puts you right in the middle of some of Scotland's finest links golf, with the comfort and facilities to make a multi-day trip easy.

Woodlands is an excellent hotel that is brilliantly situated to play the "Carnoustie Ring". Travel time to the courses is kept to the minimum and the service and facilities provided more than matched our expectations
