It was at Panmure Golf Club in 1953 that the legendary Ben Hogan made his rigorous preparations for victory at Carnoustie in his only Open Championship appearance, he was victorious by four shots & achieved a course record 68 in the final round. Hogan spent two weeks familiarising himself with the local turf, he is rumoured to have cut the 17th green to his precise specification & even returned the cleaned mower to the head greenkeeper. It is the same turf that keen golfers flock to Panmure for today.
Panmure must be considered when touring the famous links courses in the area, it is situated only a few miles south of Carnoustie and highly regarded as having all the characteristics of a championship links.

A regular choice for Open final qualifying, Hogan fell in love with Panmure, and was reportedly particularly impressed with the positioning of a devilish pot-bunker in front of the sixth green. The members appreciated his praise so much that the trap has been known as ‘Hogan's Bunker' ever since. This par-70 layout was laid out by five-time Open Champion James Braid and has hosted a wide variety of regional and national professional and amateur competitions. Although the course gets off to a slow start with a short par-4 1st hole and relatively straight forward par-5 2nd it is straight into an excellent par-4 on the 3rd hole aptly named Pines. This dog leg hole has bunkers protecting the left hand side of the fairway and large Pine trees on the right hand side, those finding the fairway are left with a mid to long iron into a green which is protected by another two bunkers.
The 6th hole is considered one of the finest on the course, the reality is this 414 yard par-4 is one of the finest in the world. With an accurate drive required to find the banked fairway and a perfectly hit approach needed to reach the elevated green, anyone walking off with a par is sure to gain a shot or two on their playing partners.
After golf it is well worth enjoying some refreshments in the clubhouse, you'll be met with a warm welcome and a bar boasting a rich history of clippings from tournaments of yesteryear featuring well known professionals as well showcasing the club's heritage which dates back to 1845. The clubhouse itself was modelled on Royal Calcutta Golf Club, a link which is shown not only in design but also by a large painting of Royal Calcutta's Golf Club which is located in the dining room.
Located just a short distance from Carnoustie Golf Club, the city of Dundee and just over an hour from Edinburgh airport, Panmure is a must play for anyone visiting this area of Scotland.

Another superb course right next door to Carnoustie. Everything about Panmure was exceptional, from the greeting to the Clubhouse to the practice facilities. We could not have been treated better. The course and the greens were in great condition and although the course was busy this didn't affect the pace of play. Another course where keeping it on the straight and narrow is a must but a course not to be missed

Fabulous welcome and bag tags engraved with our names and month of visit was a great touch. The complimentary tipple of “ putting juice” was great. Obviously worked as my partner birdied the Par 4 sixth hole. Great and relaxed clubhouse. Thanks to Fraser for presenting the whisky glass to Dave.

What a gem. The clubhouse is exceptional, and steeped in history. We received a great welcome and given the history of the club by the Manager Craig who was rightfully very proud of the course and club. The course is extremely well presented and a good test of golf. Everyone made us welcome and were very friendly. It is definitely worth a return visit.

The course is a good test of links golf but not too difficult that you wouldn’t want to play it again.the club have put together a welcoming pack as well as a free group photo,framed,for each player plus a free shot of a local liqueur,after golf of course! The hospitality was fantastic and we would definitely play it again.
