Best Western Hotel Hermitage is a cracking base in the medieval hilltop town of Montreuil-sur-Mer, less than an hour from Calais and a handy run to the golf hotbeds of Le Touquet and Hardelot. Set in a 19th-century building, it's the sort of place golfers book again because it delivers what you need: comfort, good food and an easy-going town atmosphere once the clubs are back in the boot.

You're well placed for a proper mix of golf. Belle Dune Golf Club is under 30 minutes away, while Le Touquet and Hardelot are close enough that you can play, eat well and still feel like you've had an evening rather than a motorway mission.

The Montreuil setting is a big part of the appeal. Inside the ramparts you've got cobbled streets, historic walls and some genuinely smart dining within walking distance. It's also known as an inspiration for Victor Hugo's Les Misérables, which adds a bit of story to your stay if you fancy something beyond golf and bière.

Back at the hotel, service is warm and geared to golfers, and the on-site dining is a strong reason to stay in town rather than chasing tables elsewhere. The Jeroboam restaurant has built a solid reputation locally, offering refined French cooking that draws both hotel guests and Montreuil regulars. Breakfast is served in the Vivaldi room, a bright, welcoming space that does the job before an early tee time.

For groups, the Hermitage offers a sociable base with enough space in the public areas to gather for a drink or debrief the day's golf without feeling cramped. The hotel's size, 57 rooms, means it's large enough to accommodate a society trip but small enough to retain a personal feel.

Who is this for?
Golfers who want Le Touquet, Hardelot and Belle Dune within easy reach, but prefer staying in a proper French town with walkable restaurants rather than a resort complex.

Who is it best for?
Couples and small groups who care as much about dinner and atmosphere as they do about the next day's tee time, and want to combine quality golf with French gastronomy and a relaxed pace.

Accommodation at Best Western Hotel Hermitage

The Hermitage has 57 bedrooms, finished in a traditional style that suits the building, with the modern basics you actually care about on a golf break. Expect Wi-Fi, satellite TV and a direct dial telephone, plus comfortable beds and well-kept bathrooms, ideal when you've done 36 and your legs are letting you know about it.

Room décor leans classic rather than flashy, which fits Montreuil's old-town character. If you're travelling as a group, it's a nice middle ground, big enough to take a society booking but not so large that it feels anonymous. The rooms keep the character of the 19th-century building while delivering the sort of comfort that matters after a long day on the course.

Food is a genuine highlight here. The Jeroboam dining room has a strong reputation locally and gives you a proper French dinner without needing to drive anywhere. The cooking is refined, the sort of place that draws both hotel guests and Montreuil locals, which is always a good sign. Breakfast is served in the Vivaldi room, a bright, welcoming space that works well for golfers who want to eat properly before heading out.

If you do head into Le Touquet for a change of scene, Perard is well known for its fish soup, while Flavio's is a long-standing favourite for classic French comfort dishes, think slow-cooked pig trotters and foie gras au sauternes. The town's gastronomic reputation punches well above its size, and you'll find everything from casual bistros to Michelin-starred tables without needing to drive far.

The big win is the setting. You step outside and you're in a walkable medieval town with restaurants, bars and independent shops close by, which makes evenings easy and keeps the trip feeling like a break, not just a golf conveyor belt. Montreuil's ramparts and cobbled streets are worth an hour of your time, and the town's compact centre means you can explore without needing a car.

What makes the Hermitage work particularly well for golfers is its blend of convenience and atmosphere. You're staying in a proper French town rather than a purpose-built resort, which means genuine restaurants, local life and a sense of place. The staff are used to dealing with golfers, which helps when you need an early breakfast or want to store clubs securely.

Stylish and comfortable hotel sitting easily in the small historic town of Montreuil. Staff were welcoming and helpful. The restaurant was a really high standard. Breakfast was in its own room and was well laid out with lots of choices. The building itself was historic and beautiful…renovated to an excellent standard as a hotel. The town was small and historic in its own right. It had a cathedral and a church and two lovely squares to while away time, wandering, drink coffee or something stronger in one of the cafe/bars. A great place to spend time in and retreat to after a day on the golf course.

My group and I were really pleasantly surprised by the hotel. The building is beautiful and is in a great location with everything within walking distance. The rooms are really spacious and I loved the big bathroom and bath. I also appreciated the complimentary bottle of water in the room each day. The staff in the bar were really friendly and helpful and the breakfast selection had everything you could want. My only negative slight negative was that the pillows were quite hard.

This hotel is situated in a beautiful medieval fortified town. It is stuffed full of beautiful buildings and restaurants. The staff were warm friendly and extremely helpful. The rooms were what you would expect for this level of hotel. If you want to stay somewhere with a little character it is well worth the short extra drive to the golf courses

We always find our stay here very enjoyable and it is ideally placed for the golf courses we play, and the entertainment afterwards in the lovely bars and restaurants of Montreuil sur Mer - a great town!
