Harrogate Golf Club

Harrogate Golf Club sits on the edge of the handsome market town of Harrogate in North Yorkshire, just east of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Founded in 1892, it's an old-school venue and it's not trading on nostalgia either, the club regularly hosts National Championships and Yorkshire County events, which says plenty about the course's standing.

The layout was originally designed by Alister MacKenzie, best known for Augusta National and Cypress Point. You'll see that trademark emphasis on positioning, with bunkering that asks questions from the tee and greens that reward the right angle of approach. It's the kind of track where a sensible miss beats a heroic one, and if you enjoy plotting your way round rather than simply lashing driver, you'll have a lot of fun here.

As part of a Yorkshire tour it fits neatly alongside the region's headline names, especially if you're mixing parkland with a bit of moorland flavour. Harrogate itself also makes a great base, plenty going on after golf and easy access to other top courses in the area.
