Tucked into beautifully kept grounds just outside Inverness, the Kingsmills Hotel has been welcoming guests since 1785. It's a place where Georgian heritage meets modern comfort, where you can look out over manicured gardens and the neighbouring parkland course, and where the service feels genuinely warm rather than scripted. The setting alone, quiet lawns and mature trees within walking distance of the city centre, makes it easy to unwind after a day on the links.
With over 25 courses within an hour, Kingsmills is a cracking base for a Highland run. You've got headline acts like Royal Dornoch, Cabot Highlands and Nairn close enough that you're not spending half the day in the car, which, let's be honest, is the quickest way to drain the fun out of a golf trip. Whether you're chasing bucket-list rounds on true links turf or exploring lesser-known gems along the Moray Firth, it's hard to beat if your plan is to stack up rounds on Dornoch, Nairn, Castle Stuart and the wider Moray Firth without bouncing between hotels.
Who is this for?
Golfers who want a comfy Inverness base with loads of top courses within an hour, plus a pool, sauna and a proper whisky bar for after the round.
Who is it best for?
Multi-round Highland itineraries, couples mixing golf with spa time and anyone who wants Royal Dornoch, Nairn and Castle Stuart firmly in play without changing hotels.

The Kingsmills offers 147 rooms spread across several distinct styles, so you can choose the setup that suits your trip. The Classic Rooms are spacious and traditionally furnished, with all the essentials done well: comfortable beds, good lighting and plenty of space to spread out your kit after a round. If you prefer a more contemporary feel, the Luxury Rooms are fully air-conditioned and decorated in calming heather tones with subtle tartan accents, a nod to Highland heritage without feeling overly themed.
For something more secluded, the Garden Rooms sit in a separate wing surrounded by flower beds and evergreens. Each has its own patio looking out over the landscaped grounds, and you're provided with bathrobes and slippers so you can step outside with a coffee in the morning or a dram in the evening. It's a quieter, more private option if you're travelling as a couple or simply want to avoid the main hotel bustle.
At the top end, the Kingsclub executive wing offers the most luxurious stay on-site. You can choose between Cocoon and Retreat rooms, both designed with a sleek, contemporary aesthetic that still feels individual rather than corporate. Kingsclub guests also have access to the on-site spa, where you can book massages and body treatments using comfort zone products. After walking 36 holes on firm links turf, a deep-tissue session here is worth every penny.
All guests get complimentary access to the indoor pool, sauna, steam room and gym, ideal for loosening up after 18 or 36. The pool overlooks the gardens and the sauna and steam room are perfect for tired legs. There's also a well-equipped gym if you want to keep your fitness ticking over, though most guests are here for the golf rather than the treadmill.
Dining at Kingsmills revolves around two main options. The whisky bar is the natural gathering point in the evening, with an extensive list of Highland and Speyside malts and a relaxed menu of bar classics if you want something informal. For a more structured meal, the Conservatory Restaurant focuses on seasonal Scottish ingredients, with dishes that change regularly to reflect what's available locally. The cooking shows genuine flair and the setting, overlooking the gardens, is a pleasant spot to finish the day. You're also only a ten-minute walk from Inverness city centre, so there's no shortage of alternative pubs and restaurants if you fancy a change of scene.
The Moray Firth and the wider Highlands offer one of the densest concentrations of quality golf in Scotland, and Kingsmills puts you right in the middle of it. The courses here range from championship links that have hosted major amateur and professional events to quieter parkland and clifftop layouts that see far fewer visitors but still deliver memorable golf. What ties them together is the scenery, the firm turf and the wind, which can turn a straightforward round into a proper test depending on the day.

Hotel room was not what we paid for. We booked a twin room and received a room with a double bed and a sofa bed. I slept 2 x nights on a camp bed and woke up with a sore neck which did not help my golf.

On checking in we found that we were not in the room type we’d booked. We were not in the main hotel complex but 100yards away, the other side of the car park, in the Kingsmills Leisure and Spa building. We were originally put into a top floor room with a balcony. The balcony had a lovely view of the 10th green at Inverness Golf Club. Sadly it was also next to a busy road that rumbled from 6:00am thru till 11:00pm. I contacted YGT and was informed that the garden room, within the main hotel complex, was available the following day and that, on our return from playing golf, we would be moved seamlessly by the Concierge. Sadly, this did not happen. Instead we’re were moved to the ground floor, of the same building, with a patio. It turns out the highly desired and conveniently situated garden rooms are extremely popular and were fully booked for the duration of our stay! The patio room was much quieter but still had the constant rumble of traffic. The rooms, in the Spa complex, were large and very comfortable. The only drawbacks were the very basic TV channels and the rainfall shower head. I would have thought than, given the number of visiting golfers a sports package would be a minimum requirement? I’ve marked the facilities down because although this building is called the Kingsmills we ate breakfast in the foyer of the Spa next to the revolving door not the main hotel dining room. The gym and pool are in the main hotel. The bar, restaurant and beautiful gardens are in the main hotel. To use any of these facilities required a 100yard walk across the car park. Annoying in inclement weather and inconvenient at best. I would recommend this hotel as a fantastic base to explore the highlands. The food in the restaurant is probably the most expensive available locally but well worth the cost. During our stay we ate every dish on the limited menu and were not disappointed. The atmosphere in the bar and restaurant was welcoming and well managed given the current climate. If you book this accommodation CHECK WHICH ROOM YOURE BOOKING AND INSIST ON BEING LOCATED IN THE MAIN HOTEL.
