Moyvalley Hotel and Golf Resort is tucked into the Kildare countryside, roughly an hour from Dublin, which makes it a handy base for a proper Irish golf break without the long haul across the country. It's a peaceful estate-style set-up, but the golf is anything but sleepy.

At the heart of the resort is the Moyvalley Golf Course, designed by Darren Clarke and good enough to have hosted the Irish PGA Championship in 2016 and 2017, won by Damien McGrane and Tim Rice respectively. That pedigree shows in the shaping, the angles into greens and the way the course asks you to commit, especially when the wind gets up.

Off the back blues it runs to 7,370 yards, so longer hitters and low-handicappers can have a proper go at it. Move forward to the yellows at around 6,100 yards and it becomes far more approachable for mid-handicappers, while still giving you plenty to think about on the way round. The par-5 18th is the headline act, with water in play from the tee and again on the approach, which is exactly what you want from a closer if you're travelling with mates and keeping score.

When you're not playing, you've got countryside walks, cycle routes and Kildare's famous stud farms close by. Dublin is also near enough for a day trip between rounds if your group fancies swapping spikes for pints.

Who is this for?
Groups who want countryside calm, a proper championship course and easy access from Dublin.

Who is it best for?
Societies and competitive fourballs, low-handicappers who want a bit of length off the back tees and anyone building a Kildare break with a Dublin day (or night) bolted on.

Golf Courses at Moyvalley Hotel & Golf Resort

Moyvalley Golf Club

Designed by the 2016 European Ryder Cup Captain Darren Clarke, Moyvalley Golf Course is a par-72 layout made up of 4 par-3's, 4 par-5's and 10 par-4's. With the short holes a good mixture of yardages and well placed bunkering anyone walking away with a par will be more than happy.

Water is in play on many of the holes but it is the closing stretch of 16, (Stroke Index 1, par-4 , 476 yards from the Blue tees) which dog legs around a lake with a green that sits across from you, 17 (199 yard par-3), with large bunkers awaiting a less than perfectly struck shot right of the target and 18 (Stroke Index 3, par-5, 602 yards) with water framing the hole both left and right off the tee and left on your approach into the green. All in all the finish is something that could make your scorecard but is most likely to ruin it!

In 2016 Moyvalley hosted The Irish PGA Championship which was won by Damien McGrane with a score of -10. McGrane's final round of 69 (-3) was good enough for a 1 shot victory over Simon Thornton. McGrane's victory was secured thanks to birdies on 14, 15 and 16. The venue then went onto to host for a consecutive year in 2017 where Tim Rice won by 3 strokes.

With yet further investment planned for the resort a trip to Moyvalley is sure to be a memorable one at one of the best value golf breaks near Dublin.

Accommodation at Moyvalley Hotel & Golf Resort

Accommodation at Moyvalley spans 54 modern bedrooms across the main resort, with a choice of deluxe rooms, superior rooms with balcony and superior suites. The rooms are contemporary and comfortable, designed to give you a proper rest after a day on the course or exploring the estate. Everything feels fresh and well maintained, which matters when you're booking a group and want to know everyone's going to be looked after properly.

For larger groups or those after something more private, Balya House is the standout option. It has 10 bedrooms and comes with its own facilities, including the Cellar Bar, a private space perfect for post-round analysis, a few drinks and the inevitable debate over who really had that putt for birdie on 18. It's ideal for societies, celebration groups or extended family trips where you want your own base without sacrificing quality. Having your own bar and communal space makes a big difference when you're trying to keep a group together in the evenings, and it gives you the flexibility to set your own pace rather than working around hotel dining times.

Moyvalley also offers self-catering cottages and apartments, giving flexibility for different group sizes, budgets and trip lengths. Whether you're a fourball after a weekend break or a larger society booking multiple nights, the range of accommodation means you can tailor the trip to suit. Self-catering works particularly well if you're planning a longer stay or want to keep costs down without compromising on location or access to the course.

The estate itself has excellent walking and cycling routes with views across the course and the surrounding Kildare countryside, so there's plenty to do if anyone in your group fancies a morning off or wants to stretch their legs between rounds. The main resort also has dining and bar facilities, which keeps things straightforward if you'd rather stay on-site in the evenings.

Moyvalley gives you the golf, the space and the options to build the break you want, whether that's a competitive society weekend, a relaxed few days in the countryside or a base for exploring Kildare and Dublin while still getting your rounds in.

We were put in a fairly dated cottage to share, which wasn't great at all. Quite disappointed with the accommodation to be honest, and it was a bit too far from the other courses and in the middle of nowhere. Overall wasn't impressed with the location or the type of accommodation we had at the hotel. Golf course and facilities was great though.

Weather was sunny which helped in October. Ground was a bit wet here and there but what would you expect for this time of the year. I enjoyed playing the course. It had a nice layout of fairways and is well maintained.

Beautiful course. Very links feel to it. Not too long on some holes but if wind up then would prove a difficult test. Tee shot accuracy and accuracy is tested greatly both on approach to greens and hitting fairways due to placement of bunkers etc. Greens had been hollow tined which was disappointing but nothing we could do about that. Still very decent to putt on though. 11 Handicapper and hit 38 points with 2 dings but if greens were quicker and wind picked up a lot more my score may have been less. Excellent course. Good practice facilities also. Putting green, chipping area and driving range. Would have preferred to play this course first and then knightsbrook on the second day.
