Established in 1989, Rovos Rail is one of those bucket-list experiences that combines proper luxury with serious golf. If you like your golf trips with a bit of 'wow' built in, this is about as special as it gets. You're travelling in wood-panelled coaches restored to mint condition, eating five-star food in classic dining cars with proper silver service, and waking up somewhere new with a tee time ahead. It's Africa at a pace that lets you actually take it in, with the train doing all the heavy lifting while you sleep, eat well and step off to play some of the best courses South Africa has to offer.

The clever bit is that Rovos does the logistics. You're not driving between destinations, booking tee times or working out transfers. The train is your moving hotel, delivering you to each course rested and ready to play, then picking you up again. In between rounds you've got time to breathe, with at least one game drive built in so non-golfers (or golfers who fancy a morning off) can experience the wildlife that makes this part of the world so memorable. Both itineraries are designed with mixed groups in mind. While you're out playing, partners or travel companions can join guided excursions, relax on board or simply enjoy the scenery rolling past the windows.

Who is this for?
Golfers and their partners looking for a bucket-list trip that combines championship courses with luxury rail travel, fine dining and African wildlife. Ideal for groups, couples or societies who want a curated, all-inclusive experience where every detail is handled and nobody has to drive.

Who is it best for?
Golfers who appreciate the journey as much as the destination, and who want to play South Africa's top courses without the hassle of organising logistics. Perfect for those seeking a once-in-a-lifetime experience that blends sport, scenery and old-world elegance at a slower, more civilised pace.

Accommodation at Rovos Rail

With a maximum of just 72 passengers across 36 suites, Rovos Rail feels intimate from the moment you board. Each suite accommodates two guests in either twin or double beds, all with en-suite bathrooms that blend original Victorian fittings with modern comfort. Pullman and Deluxe Suites feature hot showers, while the top-tier Royal Suite includes a full Victorian bath, which is perfect for unwinding after a day on the course or out on safari.

The suites themselves are a masterclass in period detail. Polished wood panelling, brass fixtures, crisp linens and generous space make each cabin a private retreat. Large windows frame the passing landscape, whether that's the Karoo, the lush Garden Route or the vineyards of the Cape. There's no rush, no noise, just the gentle sway of the train and the knowledge that your next meal, your next round and your next view are all taken care of.

Dining on board is a highlight in its own right. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in beautifully appointed dining cars, with menus that showcase South African ingredients and international technique. Think Cape Malay curries, Karoo lamb, line fish from the coast and wines from the country's best estates. Dress code is typically smart casual during the day, more formal in the evening, which adds to the sense of occasion. Between meals, the observation car and lounge car offer comfortable seating, a well-stocked bar and the chance to meet fellow passengers, many of whom are golfers comparing notes on the courses ahead. It's the kind of trip where you'll make friends, swap stories and probably end up planning your next golf trip together before you've even finished this one.

Blind tee shots could do with poles as we hit good shots only to loose balls. Overall great course with super views and staff
