Golf Courses at Abu Dhabi Golf Club

The National Course

The 27 holes of championship golf on offer at Abu Dhabi Golf Club are some of the very best you can hope to play in the entire Gulf region. The Championship National Course is a tranquil oasis carved out of the desert and at 7,334 yards from the back tees it is more than long enough to test talented golfers. The perfect fairways weave their way through undulating terrain that features native palm trees, decorative plants and shrubs and seven salt water lakes. Generous greens are well protected by strategically placed bunkers so well struck shots from the fairways are a must.

As the host of The Abu Dhabi Golf Championship which attracts the world's top golfers each year, anyone visiting Abu Dhabi Golf Club on their holidays is sure for a treat. Whilst the pros seem to breeze round the course well under par, for most club golfers playing off the yellow tees will have to play well to challenge their handicap with a premium on accuracy rather than length key to playing well here, courtesy of the deep fairway bunkers and snagging rough.

Garden Course

For those looking for a more relaxing round of golf there is also a par 36 nine hole Garden Course which is also a great place for beginners to begin their love affair with the game of golf. After dark this course comes alive under the floodlights with Night Golf.

There is nothing better than seeing a white golf ball trace into the black sky around the pristine layout at Abu Dhabi, with a mixture of par-3's, 4's and 5's this makes for a great evening of golf.

European Tour Events

As one of the best golf courses in Abu Dhabi and the UAE, Abu Dhabi Golf Club is a memorable golfing experience, complete with one of the most iconic clubhouses in golf. As one of the premier events on The European Tour, the event has seen multiple winners with Martin Kaymer, Paul Casey and Tommy Fleetwood all managing to win the tournament on more than one occasion.

2021 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship

Tyrell Hatton left Rory McIlroy still looking for a first Rolex Series win in Abu Dhabi. The Englishman stormed to victory in the final round to claim his fourth Rolex Series win after previous victories at the 2017 Italian Open, 2019 Turkish Airlines Open and 2020 BMW PGA Championship. The two men jockeyed for the lead in the opening holes but Hatton stormed away from the Northern Irishman after the turn, ending up 4 shots clear of the field.

2020 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship presented by EGA

The 1st Rolex Series of 2020 was won by Your Golf Travel's Chief Holiday Officer Lee Westwood. His rounds of 69, 68, 65 and 67 saw him claim a 2-shot victory over a world-class field including World Number 1 Brooks Koepka, Tommy Fleetwood and Sergio Garcia. This victory was his 25th win in 554 appearances which saw the 46-year old become a winner in 4 different decades on The European Tour following his 1st ever win in 1996. Having led the field in fairways hit with a remarkable 70% of them found as well as 78% of greens found in regulation, Lee's victory was his 44th worldwide and one that saw him climb inside the world's top 30 golfers.

2019 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship

With an opening round of 62, Shane Lowry won the 2019 edition of The Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship presented by EGA, in it's first showing as a Rolex Series event, winning over 1,000,000 euros in the process. This was the start of a year to remember for Lowry who went onto claim his 1st Major Championship in claiming The Open Championship at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland.

2018 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship

Following an amazing 2017 that saw Tommy Fleetwood claim the Race to Dubai, Fleetwood was able to make an early winning start to the season by claiming back-to-back victories in Abu Dhabi for the 1st time since Martin Kaymer in 2010 and 2011. Fleetwood's final rounds of 67 and 65 were enough to claim a 2 shot victory over England's Ross Fisher.

2017 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship

Won in terrific style by Tommy Fleetwood who managed to set a -17 total to claim the title by one shot from USA's Dustin Johnson and Spain's Pablo Larrazabal who both finished with closing rounds of 68 compared to Fleetwood's 67 which was enough to win the coveted title.

2016 Abu Dhabi Championship

The 2016 Abu Dhabi Championship had one of the most exciting finishes with Rickie Fowler, Rory McIlroy and Henrik Stenson, Thomas Pieters all in contention come Sunday afternoon. Rickie held his nerve and produced two moments of magic to win the event by one shot ahead of Rory Mcilroy. Rickie chipped in on the 17th and then had a solid par on the last to win the event despite Rory making an eagle 3 on the last to finish just one shot shy of Rickie. He became the second American after Chris Dimarco to win the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship.

2015 Abu Dhabi Championship

The 2015 Abu Dhabi Championship was extremely tight, with several players in contention come Sunday afternoon.  Gary Stal of France came out on top with a score of 19 under par to win his first ever European Tour event. He won by shot ahead of Rory McIlroy so no pressure for Stal down the last few holes. Also in contention on Sunday was the likes of Martin Kaymer, Victor Dubuisson and Thomas Pieters, which made for an excellent Sunday finish.

2014 Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship

Spain’s Pablo Larrazábal held his nerve on the final green to deny a chasing pack including major champions Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson. The 30-year-old holed a five-foot birdie putt at the last for a closing five-under-par 67 and 14-under total. That left Mickelson needing an eagle from the middle of the fairway, but despite finding the green in two the American was unable to hole his putt from 50 feet. He finished alongside McIlroy at -13.

What the pro’s say:

“I've started here every year since I've been on Tour since 2007. I've been very successful. This is always a place where I like to come. There's more competition, but it's in general, I really enjoy coming here overall; the people, the golf course, the food, the hotel, everything feels really comfortable to me.” – Martin Kaymer

“We have got great practice facilities here, as well as a golf course that can identify your strengths and your weaknesses. It's a world class course and in immaculate shape and you can easily identify where you're playing well and where you're not.” – Phil Mickelson

“It's a golf course that's always sort of suited my eye. I've always done well here. I had a couple of chances to win, and Martin Kaymer was just too good those times.  It’s a long golf course and you've got to hit it well off the tee and take advantage of the par fives, which I feel like I can do.” – Rory McIlroy

Played the course 3 times. The course is beautiful and has a number of water features which make it interesting. All greens have an elevation leading up to them and are pretty quick and run true. The greens had been sanded following the competition so were a little slower than normal. I am a single handicap and played off the white markers with my husband although they are not slope rated for ladies. I thoroughly enjoyed playing the course and the pros shop was well stocked with ladieswear.

Overall the course and facilities felt tatty and in need of tidying up, based on our previous two visits to this course. The greens were in good condition but very firm and fast following the Team Cup being played the week prior to our visit. This is a challenging course due to the bunkering and carries into the greens for amateurs. Hopefully there are plans to tidy up both the course and the impressive clubhouse as they both are in need of it.

Golf was very enjoyable, the course was in good shape and our rounds were played at a nice pace, no pressure from players behind. I guess the only comment was that, due to preparation for the Team Cup, there were lots of maintenance people on the course. The upside of the Team Cup was that we saw lots of GB&I and Continental Europe players getting ready for the match!

Played in the Pro/Am in 2015 before the HSBC event and love this course. Little has changed since then, with the exception of the grandstands and the treacherous rough. The condition was great, but again not what it was like when it hosted the HSBC. So many great holes and whilst the greens are a lot flatter than most of the courses we played it is still a great course. However it does lack some of the definition of the others and in parts feels a little too open and the holes lose some of the framing that others have. Holes 9 & 18 were real standouts for me when I last played, but without the grandstands feel a little flatter. However par 3 12th and par4 dogleg 17th were still as good as I remember.

Course was in top condition but another course where they happily schedule two ball and four ball groups together and do not care if some golfers are beginners. So it was pretty slow (4 1/2 hrs for two ball in buggies). Course was in immaculate condition.

It is just over 11 years since I last played this course and it has matured nicely. To be honest your first impressions are influenced by the magnificent clubhouse which provides a truly iconic backdrop to elements of your round, but the course is no slouch. A good mix of challenges await making this a course on which you need to play well to score well, but it is also fun and enjoyable. Standout holes are 4, 6, 9, 12 & 18 but the others are good. All in all a great tour venue made even better by the amazingly lovable and ludicrous clubhouse. Hope to be back soon.

Great golf course with an amazing par-5 to finish back towards the Falcon. The clubhouse was fantastic, with plenty of function rooms, TV's and bars, the service was top class both out on the course (free ice lollies and iced towels bought out on a regular basis). Felt the course was similar in design to the Majlis in Dubai. Would definitely stay at the Westin Hotel (on site at Abu Dhabi Golf Club) and the course is great but given the choice would play Yas Links. The weather was amazing, it was 38 degrees every day in late September so book from mid October to April if you want it a bit cooler.

Abu Dhabi Golf Club was the first course, it was perfectly located onsite for the Westin hotel. The service and the accommodation was 10 out of 10 in every area. The golf course was challenging yet not too demanding. Every hole there was always someone nearby in a buggy with cold towels and refreshments. When we finished our game we were seriously looked after in the bar where we were served great food and waited on with drinks as we watched the Ryder Cup.

First time I have played golf in Abu Dhabi but was really impressed with the whole set up. All three courses we played were in great condition, and were a good test of golf for all levels of player. The standard of the facilities in terms of practice areas, club-house, and general welcome was as good as anywhere I have visited, the club house at Abu Dhabi Golf Club is a real sight. It was nice to play a course which has hosted the pros before and it is more than manageable off the normal tees if you can keep it on the fairways!

Would thoroughly recommend a trip out there to anyone, and for those worried that the 19th hole may be a little tame, then they need not worry.
