The championship seaside links is visually stunning, and tremendously exciting to play thanks to the great variety of holes that the natural landscape provides. The front nine has a distinct parkland accent, as it runs in and out of the pine trees, whilst the back nine is home to some of the best links golf in mainland Europe. The signature holes - 13, 14 and 15 - run along the Atlantic coastline, providing fantastic views of the sea, dunes and back towards the pine forest.
Course architect Cabell Robinson has designed Praia D'El Rey to be the complete golfing challenge, with bold, deep bunkers, undulating greens, and natural rugged sand border areas which contrast sharply with the lush green fairways. The course was recently rated the 7th best in Europe by Golf World magazine, while the International Association of Golf Tour Operators voted Praia D'El Rey the best on the continent.
There is also a Golf Academy on site, with 24 individual driving range bays. The main putting green is one of the biggest in Europe (900m2) and there is a fairway practice bunker adjacent to driving-range bays, all specifically designed to allow you to hone your skills.
Golf Magazine recently rated Praia D'El Rey as the 13th best golf course in continental Europe and it is certainly one of the best courses in Lisbon.

The accommodation was great, spacious and clean 2 bed apartment. End of October is clearly end of season; quiet and semi-closed feel about it. The Clubhouse bar is way over priced and played the same slow jazz music each night, leading to a lack of atmosphere. Wouldn't take much to improve it. General facilities excellent and access to the Marriott spa for 20 euro was welcome.

Very disappointing resort. Accommodation tired, facilities limited. Access to indoor swimming pool cost €40, gym€20. Limited eateries some of which weren’t open as was supermarket for 2 days after we arrived. A hire car would have been beneficial.

The apartment was clean and spacious, though fairly dated. Housekeeping was inconsistent. What is the point of supplying two coffee pod machines if you don’t supply/replace the pods ?
Oliver
✓9 Oct 2025
The food was the biggest disappointment, the breakfast was not great - powdered eggs and greasy meat. It was more focused on quantity rather than quality. Clubhouse menu was ok, not very authentic and felt like fastish food. The rest of the stay was good.

We stayed in beach apartments which were very spacious, comfortable and well kitted out. The facility for shuttle buses on the resort was very helpful and efficient. Breakfast at the Mare restaurant was very good with plenty of choice. Reception staff were friendly and helpful in suggesting restaurants and ordering taxis etc. All in all excellent experience.

We had an amazing time at this Marriott resort, staff and food were exceptionally good, shuttles were always on time and golf was difficult but fun. Only disappointing thing was we were refused access to the main resort pool (Marriott hotel) unless we paid 40 euros each despite being in the resort apartments.

Really clean and well kept estate and the apartments are large and comfortable. The resort is massive and perhaps a little isolated, as such you are restricted in options. This is fine if only there for a short period but menus tend to get a little repetitive if there for longer. It seemed expensive but then again everywhere is these days and I guess it is probably on par with other similar resorts. The shuttle service works really well in getting you from one part of the estate to annother and the staff are very friendly.

2 bedroom apartment Village Ocean. Apartment nice, really big and spacious and nice decors, tiled floors but they all need a bit of TLC and need regular cleaning. Beds changed floors don’t get washed surely for the money you pay this is an automatic process, simple stuff. Sunloungers on balcony dirty and never cleaned. Coffee machine didn’t work. Bedside light didn’t work. Safe was closed so couldn’t set it(eventually sorted)Very basic amenities. Swimming pool area very dirty(see photos) handful of sun loungers and very dirty, birds poo on every one, cigarette butts and even a dead bird lying at poolside. Only cleaned because we asked 3 days in. Small shop locally but very basic. If your self catering you have to get in and out of Óbidos for groceries best option car hire or uber(€13 each way)

It wasn’t the hotel but an apartment in the complex which is basic but completely fine for our requirements for short trip. Shuttles between venues sometimes took a while to arrive. Staff amazing and couldn’t do enough to help. Be aware ‘hotel’ facilities (e.g swimming pool) require additional payments if you want to use as you aren’t a ‘hotel’ guest.

We were disappointed to be in an apartment , not the hotel . We chose Priaia D’El Rey for the pool and spa, which was an additional cost so could not afford it every day . We also had to wait a long time for the shuttle, our apartment was a long way from the clubhouse .

Accommodation was dreadful, wasn't what we had booked. Transfers never turned up when they did it wasn't big enough for the group. Generally an awful experience not helped by the worst weather in Portugal for many years. Rooms and facilities are tired and in need of update. There were flies everywhere in the clubhouse almost swarm like which didn't seem to bother the staff.

Villa and pool was good as were the free transfers around the resort. Hotel food was bang average and found better places locally in Ferrel. The first apartment we were allocated and had one night in was really damp. It had a de-humidifier in showing signs it had problems. After 2 hours of negotiating they moved us to more modern 2 bedroom flat which was lovely. A little bit awkward waiting for a shuttle bus during the evening when busy.

We stayed in an apartment. When we checked in we were told that the apartment we had booked was very basic and one of the older apartments at the resort. We agreed to upgrade at what appeared a reasonable amount. It would have helped at the time of booking if we had been given a bit more information about what apartments were available and at what prices. Even the apartment to which we upgraded was pretty basic and the furnishings were quite tired. It would also have been helpful to be told that the shopping facilities both on site and close by are really very limited. Fortunately, we have friends living in the area who were able to help us with where to shop and where to eat.

Overall very good with accommodation close to the clubhouse. Shuttles to & from golf courses were on time. Poor initial experience with the transfer from the main hotel to our accommodation. The driver didn’t know where our accommodation was and admitted that he was lost! From arriving at the hotel it took 30 mins to be transferred when it should have taken 5 mins. Breakfasts were poor, with food & drink regularly needing replenishing, and no staff to do it.

Generally very good, staff excellent and shuttle bus system worked well except on one occasion. The resort needs a mini supermarket of some kind as there is not one to buy essentials such as coffee, milk, bread etc for our apartment. The nearest town is 2 to 3 miles away and would involve getting a taxi, which is not ideal for a short trip. Generally all very good 😊

We stayed in the Village Garden part of the resort in a villa. Having been to a hotel in Vilamoura for many years the pace of the trip was much slower with much less bars and restaurants but that actually worked for us. Accommodation was great and the whole resort once you got used to a slower pace and into the rhythm of transfer buses works well. The beach was stunning and all staff looked after us well. Overall amazing value and fantastic courses.

We booked(and paid for) a Beach Front “ocean view” suite only to be told on arrival that our booking agent had in fact booked us into Ocean Village so our view was of shimmers and roofs and the parking lot! Once we contacted the booking agent the next day we were allowed to move into the view suite we had actually paid for. Nothing was offered in recompense apart from an apology… no Refund or free round of golf… we found this very poor. Having said all that the Beach Front suite was delightful and very well equipped apart from having a bizarrely small TV for such a large living room.

Stayed in the Garden Village, which is about two miles from the Marriott Hotel complex with its bars and restaurants. The first floor apartment was two bedded, with a vast kitchen and two bathrooms. The sitting room had patio doors on two sides one leading to a well furnished terrace. An excellent swimming pool was just below in a well tended garden. So good was the apartment that enquiries were made about the cost of purchase. Although a drive away from the Marriott, our part of the resort had an excellent seafood restaurant cum bar called Maré, that also served a decent breakfast.

We were upgraded from a Garden view to a Beach view two bed villa not the hotel. It was very well appointed and ideal if you want self catering with a fully equiped kitchen. It is a quiet and a short walk to the stunning beaches and overlooking the Praia D'El Rey sea holes. There is an eratic opening hours mini supermarket and fish restaurant, Mare, a short walk away. The restaurant is expensive compared to local places.

This is a review purely about the accommdation we had in the "Village by the garden" apartments. Generally they were fine, although the hot water did not work in one of the two apartments when we arrived (though resolved when we noted it). The location of our apartment within the resort was not ideal as we had to get the shuttle bus everywhere. The shuttle bus was in fact the biggest problem with the resort as it simply wasn't reliable. Biggest issue was when they allowed us to "book" it for the following morning to get to West Cliffs for our 0800 tee times but they simply didn't turn up and clearly hadn't made any record of the booking. Disappointing in that respect.

Golf courses were good and I’d probably rate troia as number 1, then west cliffs and then Praia del Rey. West cliffs has great potential, but needs significant improvements to realise the potential as tee boxes were in terrible condition as well as a lot of the buggy paths/around the edges of the course. If the trait is quiet then it can feel a bit soless, we decided to have supper one night in baleal which is well worth doing. For troia we stayed in central lisbon and I’d strongly advise that as the course has limited options in respect to food and drink, other than nice beaches and beach cafes in nearby comporta at the right time of year. Central Lisbon to troia is 1hr 30mins incl. boat trip from setubal which is worth doing.

A beautiful setting and the back nine in particular is a joy. A relatively open resort style course with not too many lost balls. We really enjoyed playing here. The greens are fast and full of subtle breaks, single puts were a rare beast amongst our group. I was surprised at how wet the fairways and greens were maybe a time of year thing, we were there in September. Although wet, the greens were still really quick and true. Great fun and suitable for a wide range of golf ability.

course I’m great condition, greens nice . Staff really nice and attentive but management and owners need to have a rethink. All about numbers eg money not customer experience. When speaking to others they have all had a similar experience. Needs money spent on most things. Views of the ocean are spectacular and course in good condition. It’s all A bit unprofessional. No starter. They let people play of the 1st and 10th tee. We go out first to get a quick round in only to find 15 golfers waiting on the 10th tee. Hugely frustrating. 3 hour round turned to 4.5 Hours which IMO in a buggie is unacceptable. Lots of frustrated golfers. Need to improve to take things to a new level eg introduce free water in buggy, strokesaver etc and a Starter, just a general welcome. You don’t need a buggy for this course fairly easy walk. The 1st day it was so misty we could see more than 50 yards didn’t have a clue where we were hitting 2 and no starter which didn’t help. Cleared by the 3rd hole hit 10 lost balls gggrrrr. 2nd day we arrived to practice before tee off but staff not there, hadn’t turned up, told us no access to practice buggies etc as no staff. Got sorted eventually but Absolutely shocking service. Shuttle bus pretty good always collected on time. Food and drink in clubhouse decent but expensive. Better value to get Uber to Obidos for really good fair priced food(restaurant called ja!mon ja!mon, quality €30 each including an alcoholic drink)

Course had suffered from two weeks of bad weather prior to our visit, and thunderstorms the two days before so we were very lucky with sunny days and reducing winds on this partially links-y course. This is a wonderful course. Some woodland, some links and some more inland holes. Absolutely our favourite of the three.

The golf course was super, very well maintained, manicured. The fairways and greens were in great shape. The bunkers were great too all in all a great experience would defo recommend a visit.

Enjoyed the course but greens were not up to usual standard and when people cut in on the 10th hole it tends to slow down the back none and leave a disappointed feeling

Of the 4 courses in the area this was by far the fairest course to play. The variety of holes was great and played more in line to all handicap abilities. The views along the Atlantic coast of the back 9 is breath-taking. Greens are still tough and conditions of fairways are good. For some reason the front 9 seems more protected from the onslaught of the Atlantic winds. The biggest gripe was we played the front 9 in 2 hours and when we reached the 10th we were held up by members golf tournament. This meant the back 9 took over 3 hours 30 to complete. Spoiled what could have been a perfect day.

When the wind blows off the ocean it makes life very difficult however the views along the ocean are epic! A very good blend of inland golf through trees and beachside. Fast greens and good condition throughout. Pace can be slow.

Really fast sloping greens were amazing but could be on cusp of unplayable for the higher handicappers in our group.

The on course experience never ceases to amaze. The links course back nine have the most stunning outlook of the ocean. PDR is now a very popular course so maybe tees every 12 minutes rather than 10 minutes could assist the pace of play which was very slow.

Unfortunately the holing experience was not good. I have been playing Praia since 2001 and always enjoyed it. This time there were no marshals on the first or tenth tees for starting purposes and none on the course to ensure that play progressed at a decent pace. Tee times were changed at the whim of Praia without consultation. It took over 6 hours for our last round which is ridiculous especially when they have given you a tee time of 14.10 knowing well that you can not complete 18 holes in daylight. (We managed 15). I will never go back to Praia which is very sad as I love the course. I shall also be publicising the state of the fairs in as many golf magazines as I can find plus any other outlet that I can find. To say that I am incensed is an understatement.

Can't fault the course one bit but on the back 9 on the second round we was waiting quite a bit

The course was visually great and loved the blend of woodland and links style holes. Some great photos on the coastal stretch. What seriously let the course down was the heavily watered fairways, and by heavily - all night and over watered. This meant there were no runs on fairways and plugged balls. Have played golf in Portugal in October many times before at other resorts and never had such an issue or as wet a course. No rain fell during our 4 days there. It was the equivalent of winter golf in South Wales.

The slow rounds were due to players in front. Again as at Vidago Palace no one let you play through and it would not be the right thing to ask. So our momentum was lost. Also the heavy rain and thunder/lightning on every golf day meant that we could not play a full round. Again for our first abroad golfing experience this was such a shame.

✓31 May 2022
Our most fun experience. Stunning views, great layout and the most accessible golf for mixed abilities. We absolutely loved it and actually for us ranked higher than West cliffs. All the courses in the area seem to run out of electric trolleys and buggies on busy days so book ahead if you need that.

✓12 Apr 2022
A charming course with many wide open and forgiving fairways but still offering a high degree of challenge. The front nine meanders through the trees and the back nine is a wind blown delight as you play alongside the ocean. The views are terrific and each hole unique. A much more comfortable lay out than West Cliffs for the mid to high handicapper

We got paired up with two social players (no handicaps) who could hit the ball a long way in the wrong direction. Looking for balls on almost every shot got rather wearing. The course was empty so we would have had a more enjoyable round as a two ball.

We did Praia, West Cliffs and Royal Obidos. We are all around 20 handicap and all the courses were very playable. Don’t let people put you off West Cliffs. It’s lovely. The fairways are wide enough but we did lose some balls. Obidos was good fun. Praia is basically two courses in one moving from woods to coast. There wasn’t any pressure in the tees and we moved around nicely. All the courses are around 4.5 hours with s buggy.

This is completely different to the other courses in the area, again another superb course witch has some very contrasting holes. The front 9 is parkland and the back 9 runs along the Atlantic with fantastic views across the area, again a fair course for all handicap’s

The pace of play was disgraceful. Too many people were allowed on the course. Handicaps were not checked. They used the 1st and 10th to tee off. We were forced to join other golfers even though I specifically asked to play alone. This resulted in 51/2 hour round with two players who couldn’t play golf. Scoring 8,9 and 10 on most holes. We spent the whole day looking for balls. It was horrendous. I phoned the Marshall to come and sort it out but they didn’t answer. We ended up changing our tee times to 3pm in the evening so we didn’t have to join anybody. This proved to be the best solution even so it was painfully slow at the back of the field of golfers that couldn’t play. The final day we were behind a family of 4 parents and two boys none of them could play they didn’t repair any divots or pitch marks. By the end of the round we felt like green keepers. We will never go back to this resort, very disappointed ..

Relatively, compared to West Cliffs, easy course in beautiful setting. Somewhat spoilt by pace of rounds but this is understandable given we were a 2 ball and Covid restrictions wouldn't allow pairing up with non-bubble players. Greens suffering a bit from overuse but overall a fair test amid varied and stunning scenery. Again the staff were great and practice facilities also.

fantastic course. beautiful condition and a great contrast between the two nines with one more links type and the other more inland. some stunning holes down by the sea. we played off the back tees but the course is sufficiently forgiving if you miss the fairway so you can find the ball and keep pace of play moving

This course is lovely, but unfortunately once again between golftravel and the resort we were lied to again, we had 12.40 2teetimes and promised we would have plenty of time to get round, but no, we couldn't play the last 2holes on both days as it was pitch black.
Michael
✓24 Oct 2018
I think this is the best course on the site. Holes 12-16 are the closest to links golf I've seen on the portuguese circuit, plus there is less walking between holes, so it's the most carry-bag friendly. I always carry my bag.

I played this course four times and did not tire of it. It has some spectacular holes by the sea and some delightful holes through pine woods. Many of the tees are elevate and provide beautiful vista. The course was in very good condition, green and lush with any worn patches cleary marked GUR. The clubhouse was very nice, with staff who did their best to help. We found the food expensive but good. In conclusuion I would say that I enjoyed it enough to go again.

✓6 Oct 2018
A very good course with stunning holes along the atlantic coast it is testing but fair and can be enjoyed by all handicaps. For the start of October it is in very good condition and appreciably better than those experienced in the Algarve. It is a course, as are most in Portugal, where buggies should be used there are some long distances between greens and tees. It was evident that the slower rounds are predominately caused by those pulling trolleys which is a shame.

Could tell it was more established that west cliffs, but is less interesting apart from a fun back nine I recall. Also feel it just needs some small tweaks to dramatically change my perception of it from a good to quality course / set up.
