Set upon Portugal’s stunning Silver Coast, West Cliffs Golf Course rolls between towering sand dunes, creating a golfing experience that will take your breath away. Having only opened in 2017, West Cliffs’ masterful layout has taken the golfing world by storm, becoming one of the top-ranked courses in Europe in a matter of months.
Located on the same site as the famed Praia D’El Rey Resort, only 1 hour North of Lisbon, West Cliffs shares some of Europe’s most impressive golfing real estate. With sweeping ocean vistas on nearly every hole, the course fits effortlessly into its natural surroundings. Rated as one of the best courses in Lisbon, if you get to play one course, make sure it’s this one.
With unobstructed views of the Atlantic, a round at West Cliffs Golf Course is one that few will forget. Spreading out across more than 200-hectares, the course sweeps between impressive sand dunes and natural Portuguese countryside to provide a golfing examination that's perfect for both professionals and golf holiday makers alike.
With a par of 72 matched by a yardage in excess of 7,000 yards from the back tees, the course is enjoys a host of great par-3's with the finishing par-4 17th and 18th holes amongst some of the toughest.
Designed by Cynthia Dye, the niece of legendary golf course architect, Pete Dye, is a course that has utilised the natural environment to create a memorable golfing experience. Cynthia went onto say about West Cliffs Golf Course “With the Atlantic visible from every hole, West Cliffs is the most natural golf course site imaginable. One of the most impressive characteristics of the course is just how anchored it is to the native coastal environment." Praise indeed and no surprise why so many travel here each year.

West Cliffs Golf Course already features in The Top 100 Golf Courses in Europe. It measures as a Par-72 just under 7,000 yards from the back tees but with a strong sea breeze, it more than plays it’s length. Fortunately with 5 tee boxes to choose from, it’s playable for all levels and handicap.
For golfers looking for a unique experience then West Cliffs is the course to play as the course combines the greenery of natural vegetation with sand dunes, and a variety of elevation changes to provide exceptional views of the Atlantic Ocean. One hole could be narrow, shadowed by tall pine trees and the next wide open with a strong sea breeze. It’s an incredibly diverse round of golf that combines the best of links and parkland, that certainly won’t be forgotten.
After your round, you can enjoy a drink or a meal in the stunning modern clubhouse which offers views across the course and towards the sea beyond. Regardless of how you’ve played, some time in the 19th hole at West Cliffs is sure to be a memorable experience.
West Cliffs is the perfect destination for those that want to play the best courses in Portugal and could be a particular favourite for those that enjoy links courses in the sunshine. Although, the Silver Coast in Lisbon doesn’t have the same amount of options as in the Algarve, it definitely has the quality as with the likes of the already acclaimed Praia D’el Rey and now West Cliffs neighbouring each other, it’s a destination that could match any in Europe.

My favourite of the three, with some phenomenal green complexes, especially the second. Short game has to be very creative to get up and down here.

✓15 Nov 2025
Probably the hardest course I've played - would help to have previous experience on it. Great condition and layout though, 18th is fantastic down towards the sea. Some big slopes on the greens made for an entertaining putting experience. Not for the faint hearted but loved it.
Fiona

Fabulous course in great condition. Very tricky greens.
Richard

Great course but choose your tee carefully if windy ! We are an “older” group and played one day with trolleys which was a slog so would recommend booking buggies. Great food in the restaurant too.
Thomas
✓26 Oct 2025
The course is very difficult, especially for a higher Handicapper. It has a lot of unusual holes/layouts. The Par 3’s were mostly very short, which felt a bit odd. The speed of play was atrocious, largely because the group in front of us ( probably fellow YGT guests) spent more time taking photos than playing Golf.

✓11 Oct 2025
What a great golf course. Great layout with some phenomenal holes. Great variations from hole to hole, with a fair amount of water and elevation changes. On top of that, the views were truly magnificent. if I was going to make one criticism, it would be that one or two of the greens were very undulating and unless you know where to leave your approach shots, they could make you look a little silly. However, overall it was incredibly enjoyable and will definitely be back.

We loved this golf course, with great views and interesting holes it made for a great experience. The only thing I can comment on was that bunkers were not raked and there were loads of pitch marks on the greens not fixed.
Alistair
✓4 Oct 2025
This is a tough test for most golfers with long carries and impenetrable rough/gorse/foliage. Unfortunately the early start we had coincided with heavy sea mist which made things even harder for first timers.

✓18 Sep 2025
Very similar to but more difficult than Praia D’El Rey. A really great track with every hole being a challenge. Even the par three’s had us thinking about where to go and distances. There are plenty of opportunities to lose balls on this course and I found the back nine tougher than the front but that may just be me. The 18th hole is magnificent, the view from the elevated tee is worth the wait.

difficult but nice course and nice facilities. Food good. Staff nice. Need to improve to take things to a new level eg introduce free water in buggy, strokesaver etc. You get nothing but your round. You need a buggy here as long walks between tees and tees. Course in decent condition although the greens had a lot of surface sand put on them.

Beautiful wild flowers adorn the entire course, which means accuracy is paramount as those flowers gobble up stray golf balls! Some magnificent inland views. The greens were very fast and difficult but all part of the challenge of a formidable but very enjoyable golf course.

Excellent course. A links amongst trees. Soft fairways gave no help to the distances, hard fast drying greens made it difficult to be good on the greens but loved it all the same. Best of the three. Clubhouse very nice and smart.

I had played West cliffs before, and loved it, and it lived up to the previous experience again. It is in a stunning setting, has some great designs particularly on the back nine, and is a good test of any golfer. Clubhouse is comfortable and well staffed. Overall a really enjoyable experience.

✓29 Sep 2024
A brilliant layout but very difficult as long carries off the tee and can't find your ball in the vegetation off the fairway and first cut.
Paul
✓22 Sep 2024
Picturesque course with good carries off most tees. Actually a little wider fairways than they appear from the tee but course planner needed. Fairways were quite wet so 30 minutes rain turned them into a slip/slide show with buggies! Greens good but a little slow and not as well maintained as Obidos or Praia Del Rey ones. Good variety of tee length to keep playable for all abilities… only play back tees if you carry your drives 250+ yards.
James
✓21 Sep 2024
You need to pick the right tees at Westcliffs. There are many 180 carries of the 55 tees. This is an outstanding course

David
✓28 Jun 2024
Unfortunately the greens were heavily dressed but technically this was a great test of golf. However it took 5 hours to get round mainly due to high handicapped players trying to play off the back tees which spoiled it for others which is a shame as it’s probably put me off from returning

✓29 May 2024
Stunning views, well kept, but really tough greens, carries, wild hazards and wind protect this course. We were advised to play off the 55 tees (But even off these tees the course played tough and would have happily played off shorter on 1st attempt)

Very tough track, might actually be too difficult for some players to really enjoy, superb design and condition, so difficult to get up and down from around the greens with large undulating greens, with runoffs. Fantastic views of the sea and surrounding area. Whilst difficult course, would definitely go back again.

Wonderful place with stunning views and great course condition. Slowish pace but we were prepared for this given holiday hotel round. We decided to mix up starting tee positions per hole as found that the holes could be played completely differently depending on choice and tailored the challenge to our liking.

✓17 Oct 2023
Everything I said about Praia applies equally, if not more, to West Cliffs. Once again despite a 13.40 start time we could not finish in daylight. No marshals ensuring a decent pace of golf and we were again left with the feeling that we were being ripped off and nobody cared.

✓3 Jul 2023
We played this course twice. A very difficult course. Our first round was over 5 hours but the second was 4 hours 15 minutes. The real issue we had was that we were not advised to book a buggy in advance and when we turned up for our first round there were no buggies available so we had to use push trollies. We booked a buggy for our second round which made the experience much more enjoyable. The course is clearly a very good one.

✓19 Oct 2022
Played West Cliffs twice, the first time it was not easy as the signage and walks from green to tee were not always well signposted. Greens were very fast and grainy which made putting interesting. The second time we played there was an hour delay due to fog and when we did start it was from the tenth and no one told us that they had treated the greens which nothing like the 1st time. They were covered in sand and were very slow.

Both my wife and I had very good rounds on West Cliffs, although we played well, I have given it a Hard rating as I can imagine it could be a bit of a nightmare if the Atlantic winds came into play. The staff were great and very helpful, the facilities top notch, and the views quite amazing.
Ross
✓31 May 2022
A great course. It is tough in the wind and off the fairway balls are going to get lost but a fantastic experience. It really builds to a fantastic finale and you won't get bored of playing it. Good practice facilities and clubhouse with excellent but relatively pricy food for a clubhouse experience. The rounds did take about 5 hours but its a holiday and sunny so it does not really matter. All the courses seem to run out of electric trolleys and buggies on busy days so book ahead if you need that.
Mike

Lovely course and views but very difficult..A little easier of the forward tees.
Wendy
✓29 May 2022

A challenging layout with spectacular views with some long walks winding through beautiful landscapes. Make sure you pick the right tee for your ability as there are some long carries to fairway. You will need your A game to score well here. Again they will pair you up with other golfers if you are not in fourballs. Reception staff not that friendly.

✓5 May 2022
A mixture of visual splendour and playability makes this course a must play. It’s harder than Praia D’El Rey but that’s only down to a few blind tee shots and the sloping fast greens.

✓12 Apr 2022
West Cliffs is a real challenge but a delightful one. Quite narrow and with ball gobbling gorse areas everywhere. The front nine is very spoiled by the huge amount of construction going on and it is a relief to get to the back nine and away from the noise. Overall this course is a “must play once” experience but not one for high handicappers

✓3 Dec 2021
The course has quite big carries off the tee and and you do need to be straight. Very hilly so glad of the buggy We were paired with with two who were rather wild and we spent a lot of time looking for their balls. Course was empty so no need to make up fours.

✓20 Oct 2021
Don’t let people put you off West Cliffs. It’s lovely. The fairways are wide enough but we did lose some balls. Obidos was good fun. Praia is basically two courses in one moving from woods to coast. There wasn’t any pressure in the tees and we moved around nicely. All the courses are around 4.5 hours with s buggy.
Billy
✓17 Oct 2021
Exceptionally slow-one par 5 had 5 lines at the same time. Tricky/difficult course but a v good challenge. Needs to be played a few times. Would help if map of hole was located on tees.delighted to play this one .

Stephen

Tough course - off the fairway and you are in bushes - literally 1000’s of them - no forgiveness. Didn’t love it but if I’d been hitting it straighter then maybe I would have !!
John
✓6 Oct 2021
There are golf courses and then there ARE golf courses. This is by far the best course we have ever played . I don’t really know how to explain this course it’s a golfers dream to play with spectacular views of the Atlantic on almost every hole. Luckily we had the benefit of the starter giving us a little talking to on the 1st to explain the different tee positions on the boxes depending on the individual’s handicap which made the whole experience a pleasure for everyone. All I got to say if you are even in or around the Lisbon area this is a MUST no debating.
Mark
✓5 Oct 2021
West cliffs is a challenge for any standard of golfer as it was for our group ranging from +2 - 24. Balls are difficult to find if you miss the fairway and carry them into the "boondie" No one will be disappointed playing here spectacular views and if you get a chance play a spare ball (if you've got any left) from the top tee at 18.
Gerry

Clare
✓28 Sep 2021
So much scrub land to tee off over. If your drive was slightly wayward you had no chance!!
Victoria
✓22 Sep 2021
The course is very narrow in parts. Some of the holes seem to be crammed into land to make a hole. Thought it would have more holes by the sea. Again too many golfers allowed on who couldn’t play golf. Much prefer Royal Obidos and Bomsuccesso
Richard
✓12 Oct 2020
Very challenging course with long carries over heather even off the yellow equivalent tees (55) so a warning to short or low ball flight hitters use the 47 tees. Fairways narrow too so take plenty of balls! Greens appear to have several elephants buried under each one! Fantastic setting and lovely people.
Jesper
✓15 Mar 2020
Very hard course, need to be a good player to enjoy this fantastic course. We played off 8 and really struggled. Also worth mentioning that this course is a long long walk.
Dan
✓14 Mar 2020
Stunning golf course with very fast greens, long carries and no place to survive. I would recommend only good golfers (near single figure and below) take this on - or go easier tees than 55.
Gary

✓19 Oct 2019
This, like Praia D’El Rey is a must play it is just stunning. We had a great final day here and what a hole to finish on! We all thought breakfast in the clubhouse here was poor and would recommend eating at Praia D’El Rey clubhouse and then getting the shuttle to West Cliffs.

David
✓6 Oct 2019
The very best of the week. Superb design by Pete Dye’s daughter, it maintained the challenge of Óbidos without the ‘tricksiness’. Memorable holes in a beautiful location with much are and attention going into even the planting of wonderful flowers and shrubs around every hole. Don’t be too macho in your choice of tee - even the ‘yellows’ have a slope of 135 or so! A delightful clubhouse in which to relax afterwards.

✓21 Jul 2019
Tee to green was very good but when you got to the greens it was just crazy hard - undulating, seriously fast and it took most of the pleasure out of playing the course, it added at least 9/10 shots to the round. Some of the hazards and carries were very hard, but managed most of them (average handicaps) but overall I came away not wanting to go back. The very natural sand dune links layout and vista didn't do it for us. Preferred D'el Rey. I guess it's a great challenge for the low handicap golfers, but not for anyone over 15.
Jeff
✓13 Jul 2019
This course is something extra special, the most stunning setting spectacular views. It’s the best I’ve ever played. Quite demanding off of the back tees. A course you have got to play massive wow factor
Martin
✓23 Jun 2019
Course too hard for holiday golf. Greens almost unfair. Off the fairway then certainly play a provisional. Most weren't and that's why it was slowish. (4 1/2 ) with a buggy. Would avoid playing course if ever went back to resort. American club pro on holiday said it was a " shame because the scenery is superb but course too difficult ". Agree.
Donal

Simon
✓22 May 2019
A real test of golf, even from the shorter tee positions. Very penal just off the fairways and greens not particularly receptive and very quick. Scoring in our Group at least 10 points lower than Praia del Rey the day before.

Charlie
✓14 May 2019

Michael
✓14 May 2019
A true beast of a course. A magnificent championship course but to difficult for the average golfer even off the middle yellow tees. Our high handicappers couldn’t make the carries. There was a good three club wind blowing which made some holes unplayable. Do not walk ! buggies essential on this vast area of outstanding beauty. I’d definitely recommend it but nearby Praia D’Rey more enjoyable.
Mike
✓11 May 2019
We played West Cliffs twice and it was challenging as any stray shots usually resulted in a lost ball such is depth and severity of the plants. That said, you find as many balls as you lose! Greens very fast with some very tricky pin positions.
Matthew
✓7 May 2019
A brilliant new addition to the Portuguese rota. Beautiful setting on the coast, but with limited views of the sea until the (better, in my opinion) back nine. Eighteenth is a delight! The course sets up tough, with plenty of shrubbery lining the rough to guarantee the pro shop makes plenty of ball sales throughout your stay. If the wind blows, it can be savage! Greens true and quick, but very tough to read, with plenty of bumps and undulations. If you play to anywhere near your handicap you'll be doing very, very well!
Geoffrey

✓29 Apr 2019
Best course, best views, tough holes, very windy, scenic, not very lady friendly, as it is very hard. Greens were great but a lot of undulations, a top 50 course in the world in my opinion, based on the experiences I have had in playing 675 courses worldwide including top ocean view courses such as Cypress Point, Pebble Beach, Cape Kidnappers, Kingsbarns, Cabot Cliffs, Bandon Dunes, Whistling Straits. This course is there with them all.

What a great course. we did have a breeze on the cliff tops but that said caused no problems the green are very fast and some long par fours and lots of thinking to do, none more so than the par 5 second with the seve monogram bunker in the distance over the water, a tremendous course and facilities

Great course. We played it 4 times. So many fantastic holes. Big undulated greens, very difficult to avoid 3 puts. But even if you leave a green with a tripple, you still look forward to the next hole. More value for money than playing Praia D'el Ray and Royal Obidos. A lot more.

We played in December so it was nice and quiet but the greens had been scored and sanded. We were bothered by mosquitos and my husband was bitten even through shirt and jumper. Chose to swap second round to Praia del Rey as it was in better condition and no mosquitos. Did not enjoy it as mipuch as last year.

stunning looking course, but extremely tough. fantastic test for lower low handicap players, but others will struggle if you cannot hit long and straight as you will spend a lot of time looking for balls. anything even slightly off the fairway is likely to be lost. long walks between green and next tee so buggy is recommended. course is relatively new so condition not quite as good as praia del rey, but can understand why people rave about this course and will get even better as it matures. some beautiful looking holes

Nice course but still has a lot of sand banks and lacks green trees. Etc. In time this course will be super.

I'm not a fan of courses that penalise for missing the fairway by a yard, and not just at certain spots, but everywhere. Course architects need to know that golfers don't enjoy searching for or losing balls. Touted as a links course, I was disappointed as there is not a blade of long grass around, rather spikey shrubbed wasteland. It may mature over the years, but PDR and RO are superior in almost everyway, imho.

2nd Best golf course I have played other than the West course at Wentworth! I must play for everyone!! Amazing set up, greens perfect, layout perfect and the views are amazing!! Even thinking of buying a place when I retire to be able to play it all the time!!

Hot day and no buggies, power caddies available. Walking was hard.

Great course just showing its relative newness. The greens had been dressed so not really as they would be normally. Overall a cracker and worth a visit. It'll be wonderful in a few years. Clubhouse is great.

A fantastic course, very tough with unforgiving rough and in great condition. A number of tee boxes ensure only the lower handicaps use the longer tee positions with grading forwards for higher handicaps of 16 and above. The Starter knows what he is talking about some long carries from the tee and quick greens with undulations stick in the memory. Even though our stableford points were low it was a joy to play and a second round would have been even more enjoyable having learned a lot from the first. The Clubhouse is a futuristic glass box on stilts and matches is superb offering large sports screens in the bar and restaurant.

This will get better as it beds in. The combination of us never having played it before, multiple blind tee-offs, and the fact that aerial imagery is not yet available on most apps made it very challenging.

Poor tee boxes and condition from green to tee, but great potential. Could be done really well with minor tweaks, but until they do it makes for an experience marginally below expectations. Course staff also seemed poorly trained as would often find ourselves waiting for several minutes whilst they continued to do things in the greens or fairways between groups. Buggies were basic for what one would expect nowadays in a top course.
