Prestwick was founded in 1851, and developed under the stewardship of Old Tom Morris, who was pried away from St Andrews to be Keeper of The Green, Club and Ball Maker.

Golfers heading to Prestwick Golf Club are assured a truly historical experience at one of the best courses in Ayrshire. As the original location of The Open Championship, it is a golf course that features amongst many bucket lists and must visit golf destinations.

Whilst the golf course has a connection with one of the originators of golf in Old Tom Morris, Prestwick has received praise from modern major championship winning greats including Tom Watson, Mark O'Meara and Ernie Els with testimonials such as "the best golf experience in the world...".

Anyone wanting a true links golf trip around the West of Scotland is sure to find a golfing paradise at Prestwick and for an extended trip venturing onto Royal Troon and Turnberry are incredible golf courses to make a golf tour of a lifetime.

Prestwick Golf Club

Prestwick was the first course on the Open rota when the tournament was held there in 1860, the members raised money through entry fees to purchase a red morocco belt with silver clasps, and was won by Musselburgh's Willie Park. When Young Tom Morris won three successive titles from 1868, he was awarded the belt permanently, necessitating the purchase of the now famous Claret Jug in 1872.

It is only the Old Course at St Andrews that has hosted more Open Championships than Prestwick. Today's visitors can expect a traditional charismatic links course, sharing the same turf as the prestigious Royal Troon, and a warm welcome in the clubhouse, where excellent food is available in both the Dining Room and the more relaxed Cardinal Room.

An absolute must play if you are in the area. Not long by any standards, but full of fun, tricky and memorable golf holes. The welcome and clubhouse are very hard to better.

The course and club was everything I’d hoped, heaped in history the clubhouse was an experience all on its own! The course is in a world of its own, thoroughly enjoyable day here and cannot wait to go back. If you’re obsessed this place is a must visit to appreciate the game and its history.

A few "quirky " holes which the starter did warn us about, but a great course with fantastic views

This is one of the most historic courses going and every golfer should make the effort to play it once and make their own minds up. We enjoyed it although some of the early holes are a bit ‘bomb alley’ and daunting for first timers. After the third hole it opens a little and we thoroughly enjoyed the day. We will definitely return and that says it all. Food and staff afterwards were a credit to PGC.

Lovely course. Interesting blind holes. Good condition. Shared fairway on two holes not so great. Interesting 17th and a nice easy drivable par 4 to finish.

Great course with a wonderful history. Definitely one to play. Only disappointment is that visitors are confined to the upstairs attic where there is a small bar and dining room so did not experience the clubhouse properly.

Prestwick is a course that one must play. It is well known to be a bit quirky in places, but overall I would say that it is good, fair test of golf. Only a couple of times a good shot to the green was punished by a random bounce. We used a Forecaddy, which is essential if you have not played the course before, due to many blind shots. The Forecaddy was good with the lines, but kept telling us, often just as we were about to hit the ball, that we were playing too slowly, and had to speed up. As we kept clear of the group behind, and did the front 9 in 1hr 55 min, and the whole 18 in 3hr, 55 min, which is quick for a Fourball, these comments were totally unnecessary. It seemed that he wanted to get back for lunch before his afternoon round. We eventually told him to button it. The staff at the club made us feel very welcome, particularly the dining and bar staff, and the reception staff. Overall, we had a lovely day at Prestwick, which is a must-do for all golfers.

Loved Prestwick. Perhaps could have a little more signage to assist a visitor to negotiate the course. But it is full of interesting challenges, and is a real Links Course.
