Southerndown is perched high above the Ogmore River Valley, and actually looks down on the celebrated links of Porthcawl. The magnificent views of the Bristol Channel are matched by the amazing course; Southerndown is almost unique, in that there are no trees or water hazards, just bracken, gorse and treacherous bunkers.
Southerndown Golf Club
Originally laid out by Willie Fernie in 1883, Southerndown has been revisited by some of the game's great architects, notable Herbert Fowler, Willie Park and most recently, Donald Steel.
The course is tough yet also extremely endearing and will be enjoyed especially by lovers of seaside golf. While not the longest, Southerndown boasts a set of short holes that are the envy of most, while the closing hole, with its dramatic split-level fairway, will live long in the memory.
The great views and superb golf course are the foundations of this coastal gem, so be sure to include Southerndown in your next golf tour of the South Wales coast.
Southerndown Golf Club is ranked as one of the best courses in Wales
