Tucked into the moorland just north of Leeds, Alwoodley Golf Club is a proper Yorkshire classic and widely regarded as one of England's best inland tests. Founded in 1907, it's also the first course completed by Dr Alister Mackenzie, long before he went on to shape icons like Augusta National, Cypress Point and Royal Melbourne.
The best bit is that the routing Mackenzie laid out more than a century ago is still recognisably the same today. The club has been careful to protect the course's original feel while stretching it to over 6,900 yards from the championship tees, so you get that rare blend of old-school strategy with a very modern challenge.
Expect classic heathland golf on sandy ground, with fairways that run, a bold set of bunkers that ask awkward questions and greens with plenty of subtle borrow. It's not a course where you can simply lash driver and hope. You'll score better if you think about angles into the greens and where the safe miss actually is. Mid-irons and long irons tend to matter here more than you might expect, and the way Mackenzie used the natural terrain to create a thinking player's course is still evident on every hole.
If you're planning a golf break in and around Leeds, Alwoodley is one of those rounds that sticks with you, especially if you enjoy golf course architecture as much as the golf itself. It pairs well with other Yorkshire courses for a 2 or 3 night UK golf break and offers that traditional club feel without being stuffy about it.
Who is this for?
Golfers who appreciate classic course architecture, strategic inland layouts and the chance to play a piece of design history in its original form. Alwoodley suits societies, small groups and individuals looking for a genuine test of golf in a traditional club setting, with easy access from Leeds and the wider Yorkshire region.
Who is it best for?
Mid to low handicappers who enjoy reading greens, shaping shots and playing thoughtful, angle-dependent golf. It's also ideal for architecture enthusiasts keen to experience Mackenzie's first masterpiece and understand the design principles that shaped his later, world-famous courses.

MacKenzie was, in fact, a member of the club, and lived and practised in the local area. Alwoodley reflects the fundamental tenets of course design that founded the architect’s continued projects.
The club spans an area of delightful heathland, whose springy turf is perfect for golf. The club itself is traditional and has resisted any temptation to alter MacKenzie’s original design.
The only changes that have come over the years is the lengthening of the championship tees with the course now measuring over 6900 yards making this a real test of golf.
Open Championship regional qualifiers and countless national amateur events are among the high profile events to have graced Alwoodley, so why not follow in some famous footsteps during your golf tour of Leeds’ outstanding championship gems.
Alwoodley Golf Club is ranked as one of the best courses in Yorkshire

Difficult course in the dry, Many challenging bunkers that collected ball that ran off greens and approach shots. Round was slow as we had not played the course before and each tee/shot required some thinking. Club facilities were excellent snd very high end

Cracking course! Felt welcomed by all staff in the club house and pro shop. The course was fantastic, greens were a good pace and like a carpet. Some tricky holes, where position is key, not all about distance. Would definitely recommend to friends and want to return already.
