Leven Links sits on the Fife coast and it's the real deal, a proper seaside links with firm turf, sea air and a breeze that can have you changing club at the last second. It's also home to the world's 11th oldest golf club, so there's plenty of history under your feet before you've even pegged it up.

You'll get classic links character: rumpled fairways, proper pot bunkers and greens that reward good positioning rather than simply smashing driver. When the wind comes in off the Firth of Forth it turns into a thinking golfer's course, especially if you're trying to chase it in low. The routing turns you into different wind angles so you rarely face the same shot twice.

Leven hosts the Gold Medal Championship every August and the honour roll includes names such as Lee Westwood, which tells you the test is more than just scenic.

Lundin Links is next door, Crail is a short drive away and Dumbarnie has added another must-play option nearby. St Andrews is within easy reach too (around 25 minutes), so Leven works brilliantly as part of a multi-course Fife itinerary. The town itself is a proper Scottish seaside spot, with good cafes, coastal walks and easy access to everything Fife has to offer.

Play Leven Links as part of your next Fife golf break and build in a few local favourites while you're at it.

Leven Links

The course itself loops out to the east, where it borders Lundin Golf Club at Mile Dyke, and poses some tough questions, particularly after the 13th hole when players must turn and head for home, battling against the prevailing wind.

The editor of Golf Monthly was generous enough to assert that the older part of Leven Links as "being one of the best stands of Bent and Fescues in Scotland". This quality has resulted in Leven repeatedly having the honour of hosting Open Championship qualifying when the prestigious tournament is played at nearby St Andrews.

This is a historic golf course, and is well worth visiting on the pilgrimage to St Andrews.

Beware of Scoonie Burn, which guards the green at the home hole.

Interesting to have two club houses and one professional shop for booking in. The course was a pleasure to play. Challenging layout and a great introduction to links golf.

Our second course was a bit of a let down. The fairways were very bare and we played preferred lies. The pro was very helpful when we checked in.It can be misleading around the 5th hole/6th tee as you go very easy"stray" onto the Lundin course.
