Dumbarnie Links

The golf course at Dumbarnie Links has quickly become one of the most talked-about courses in Scottish golf, and rightly so. Located on the north shore of the Firth of Forth, just 11 miles from St Andrews, this Clive Clark masterpiece occupies some of the most revered links turf in the world.

Sandwiched between two of Fife's hidden gems in Lundin Links and Elie Golf Club, Dumbarnie offers beautiful panoramic views across the Forth Estuary to Muirfield, North Berwick and the city of Edinburgh. The 345-acre site boasts a mile and a half of beach and sea frontage, with a fantastic clubhouse perched 100 feet above sea level that's worth arriving early for.

It's a proper links experience, modern in shape but unmistakably coastal. The routing makes brilliant use of the natural dune landscape, with standout holes including the 4th and 9th, both offering breathtaking coastal views just moments from the beach. The 13th and 14th continue the theme, playing along the shoreline with the kind of drama that makes Scottish links golf so special.

Firm, fast-running fairways, strategic bunkering and ever-present coastal winds mean the course can feel like two different tests on consecutive days. Expect an exposed, seaside round where club selection can change quickly once the wind gets up and you'll want to factor in a bit of extra time to enjoy the views from the clubhouse after your round.

It's one of the easiest add-ons to a St Andrews trip if you fancy something newer that still delivers that firm, seaside links feel. The course asks the same old links questions, pick your line, flight it right and accept the odd bounce, but the layout feels fresh and the setting is genuinely spectacular.

Who is this for?
Golfers building a Fife itinerary who want a marquee modern links within easy reach of St Andrews, plus groups who care as much about the setting and clubhouse as they do the scorecard.

Who is it best for?
Confident ball-strikers and strategy-lovers who enjoy firm turf, running approaches and wind-exposed holes, and anyone wanting to pair it with nearby classics like Lundin or Elie for a varied two or three-round break. If you're planning a St Andrews base, it's an easy one to slot into a Fife golf break, ask our team about tee times and the best nearby pairings.

Experience 5* Wonderful!

The course was busy on the morning of our round with many overseas visitors as a result we were paired with two separate visitors who were accompanied by family members as well as having caddies. This made concentration difficult at times as well as slowing pace of play. This resulted in our least enjoyable round of the week, which was a shame as Dumbarnie is clearly an interesting and beautifully constructed new Links which is excellent condition given its age. We fed back our views over matching players with caddies with those without to the Starter.

Wonderful links course and very friendly staff. One of us had a buggy with the requisite caddy, David Hayden, who was a gem. A great man who was very helpful and polite. Ex RAF veteran. Have so much admiration for him.
