Despite its name, Luffness New has been providing traditional and extremely testing championship links golf since 1894, when the course designed by Old Tom Morris was inaugurated. After driving through the lovely village of Aberlady, Luffness New begins a fabulous stretch of golfing land.
The A198 runs through Luffness, the 3 courses at Gullane and leads into the golfing village of Gullane, which stretches to the Open venue, Muirfield. Luffness course runs along the foot of Gullane Hill and is a fantastic layout for many golfers. Well positioned bunkers, small greens and beautifully kept fairways reward the virtues of accuracy and patience.
Luffness is a must play in East Lothian, Scotland’s Golf Coast. Visit the Clubhouse and feel the history, many golfing stories have been told amongst those walls.

The course is located at the entrance to the golfing paradise of Gullane on the East Lothian coast, and is adjacent to Gullane’s No.2 and 3 layouts. Old Tom’s creation at Luffness is a merciless test of seaside golf, especially during the summer months when the rough can peak close to knee high.
The course is an Open Championship qualifying host when the tournament is staged at nearby Muirfield, and while it is easy to say that Luffness New is excellent, it is difficult to generalise on its character. The coastal winds can change on a whim, making the course unrecognisable from morning to afternoon, exactly what links golf is all about.
Luffness is links golf as it should be, and lovers of old-fashioned seaside courses should certainly include it in any East Lothian tour.
