Craigielaw Golf Club & Lodge sits on a stunning outcrop, watching over the mouth of the River Forth and the North Sea beyond, creating the setting for a golf break to remember.
Although, the golf course is one of the youngest on Scotland’s ‘Golf Coast’, it has already hosted the Scottish Senior Open in 2018 and is ranked in the top 80 courses in the country.
The Lodge at Craigielaw is the perfect addition to Donald Steel’s magnificent golf course, located just 30 minutes from Edinburgh, it makes for the ideal base from which to play East Lothian’s epic courses. The Lodge features well-appointed rooms and is attached directly to the clubhouse.
Located in the picturesque village of Aberlady, and bordering the traditional links at Kilspindie, Craigielaw is not a classic seaside course. Massive, undulating putting surfaces give the course an American resort edge, but the overriding influence is the firm, sandy turf underfoot.
Being a modern build, Craigielaw is longer and more open than many older links, but the key to scoring still lies with the short game. The tough greens and the endless cavernous bunkers which surround them make this course a real gem.
Despite its youth, Craigielaw has already been awarded the 2006 Scottish Amateur Strokeplay Championship, and the qualifying for the 2007 Senior Open Championship, to be staged at nearby Muirfield. The excellent practice facilities at Craigielaw make it a haven for some of Scotland's best golfers.
How to get to Craigielaw Golf Club
Craigielaw Golf Club is situated to the west of Aberlady off the A198, just 3 miles from Longniddry train station.
Address: Aberlady, East Lothian, Scotland, EH32 0PY
The Lodge at Craigielaw is attached to the clubhouse of the Craigielaw Golf Club and boasts 25 comfortable rooms which can either be arranged as doubles or twins depending on preference. 13 of these rooms benefit from views which overlook the course to the River Forth, Gullane Golf Courses and the kingdom of Fife whilst the remaining 12 enjoy the peaceful and secluded view across an attractive courtyard.
The restaurant and bar area have eye-catching views of the Cragielaw Golf Club, as well as this there are some of the UK’s finest restaurants located in the city of Edinburgh, including numerous Michelin star establishments, there are also local gems in the towns of Longniddry and Prestonopans, which would need to be researched on the internet beforehand.
With over 40 miles of superb coastline, sandy beaches, stunning cliffs, rolling countryside and many award-winning tourist attractions to explore whilst staying at the Lodge at Craigielaw there will be no shortage of activities to keep you occupied, and that’s without even mentioning the 22 golf courses in East Lothian alone. North Berwick, Gullane and The Open Championship course at Muirfield are just some you may be familiar with.

The twin rooms in the lodge were very good. Breakfasts were decent enough. The bar lacked any sort of atmosphere and bizarre that there is no TV anywhere (we stayed the weekend of the US Open and had to leave the golf club to watch it!). Fortunately, The Leddie, 10 mins walk away, was excellent.

Had a great stay, a good meal on the first night, excellent breakfasts, good practice facilities (available even though we didn’t play the course) and quite a lot of Bellhaven and Merlot! Would love to stay here again.

One bed needs new mattress but hotel and golf great

Generously sized room at the back of the Lodge so without view across the course to the coast. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast choice is quite limited but the cooked breakfast buffet was good quality although they struggled to restock items in time. The restaurant was functional and food was good but lacking in healthier options. Despite view the restaurant lacked atmosphere. The best view is from the Members lounge which is only open to hotel guests in the evening.

Absolutely fantastic hotel, the staff were helpful and accommodating, the only let down was the bed, it was so uncomfortable especially after a few days golfing, other than that everything was fantastic.

We were a group of 24 golfers and this is the perfect venue for discovering the East Lothian area. The facilities (par 3 and driving range) are fantastic and it certainly is fantastic value for money. Staff were also great and we would certainly return especially to enjoy the view from the bar area which is spectacular. 5 stars given the value for money rather than actual level of the facilities

Receptionist abrupt and unhelpful. Breakfast not catering for vegetarian, very poor bread selection, poor quality coffee. TV scrambling constantly

As discussed with John we were locked out of the facility between 2am and 3am on Sunday morning. We luckily found an open door into the kitchen and entered that way otherwise we were facing a night outside. Not really good enough. We ended up missing breakfast as a result and despite logging our experience with the lodge reception no one approached us while we spent 2 hours in the restaurant eating and paying for breakfast. At the very least I would have expected someone to come and speak to us and perhaps offer us the breakfast on the house. Not really good enough and would put me off going back.

We came off the course and we told we were unable to order any food despite the fact we were residents. Only explanation was they were busy despite the fact the restaurant was virtually empty. Very poor service.

Our stay was very relaxing. Friendly welcome. Early entry to room which was not expected. Public areas very spacious and comfortable. Food very well presented, imaginative and served piping hot. Generous portions for all courses. A truly excellent experience which we would hope to repeat.

We had a great stay at Craigielaw, everything was perfect except for the pillows which were like bricks! The food was amazing and all the staff so friendly. Weather was brilliant and the golf courses so good. Hope to come back again soon!!

Our room had a tiny single bed and a huge double bed. Totally unsuitable for two unrelated golfers. The food was excellent but the service was not, especially the bar service. It will probably be better when we can go to the bar again. Pro Shop staff were efficient, friendly and helpful.
Although we enjoyed the trip a great deal we would probably consider staying somewhere else next time.

Very enjoyable stay, the hotel was spotlessly clean and the rooms very comfortable. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The food was excellent . Our only complaint was that due to the beautiful weather, the tables for dinner were right beside the window and the sun was still very hot and in our eyes which was a bit annoying. That could easily be rectified with some window blinds. The staff brought a screen on the second night. However we thoroughly enjoed
