Seve Ballesteros lit up the world of golf for over three decades. His swashbuckling style of golf was matched by a charm and personality that captured the hearts of golfers and the wider public.
Seve won 90 professional tournaments, 5 Majors and was World Number 1. Seve led the growth of European golf as a force on the world stage, including a total of 5 Ryder Cup victories as a player and captain at Valderrama in 1997.
Seve was able to achieve 50 European Tour victories between 1976 and 1995. This level of achievement was all the more impressive given the competition from many Europeans at the time when Bernhard Langer, Nick Faldo, Sandy Lyle and Ian Woosnam were in their pomp.
Sadly, Seve died in 2011, his golfing legacy lives on, not only through his achievements on the course but also through many golf course designs which we still enjoy today.
Whether it is a forced carry over a valley at Alhaurin, negotiating lakes at Royal Obidos or reading the large undulating greens at The Heritage, a day on the course as designed by Seve Ballesteros is sure to be a memorable one.
The Seve Ballesteros designed course at Alhaurin is widely regarded as one of the best in the area around Marbella. Located in the Sierra de Mijas, the course has spectacular mountain views and is a thorough test of golf from tee to green.
Measuring 6,801 yards from the tips, Alhaurin demands length from the tee but not at the expense of accuracy. Some of the fairways have severe undulations and are marshalled by mature pines and water hazards that wait menacingly to gobble up any stray drives. Shrewdly placed bunkers and clever run off areas demand precision from approach shots…unless you have a bit of Seve in you!
The course is regularly chosen to host local and regional tournaments, which is testament to the quality of the Ballesteros design.

Westerwood is one of Scottish golf’s best kept secrets. Seve designed it with the help of Dave Thomas so it comes as no surprise that it is such a high quality golf course.
Having undergone a development programme designed to improve drainage and conditioning, the par-72 layout is stretched through silver birches and firs, and the heathland and heather that are so typical of Scotland.
There are many notable holes at Westerwood but one of Seve’s is the signature hole. ‘The Waterfall Hole’ is a par three with an elevated tee and a green surrounded by a 60-foot rocky face and a devilish little burn that sweeps across the front of the bunker.
Not only is the layout a cracker, Seve’s Scottish creation boasts offers stunning views of the nearby Kilsyth and Campsie hills.
